The A8 is an entry level CPU and performs at a level which was exceeded (in more expensive chips, granted) 5 years ago. It's a good value, but it's definitely low-end.

Just about any discrete graphics card you buy would outperform the integrated GPU, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that your framerates aren't that high.

Still, an A8 should generally be playable in most games, it could be a graphical setting or something in Catalyst Control Center that's hurting your performance.

Or the shared system/video memory. You'd get better performance by adding a mid range video card.

The type of connector will not affect performance.

That wouldn't cause low framerates, unfortunately. What is/was your budget, and can you still return that machine?

yes i can still return this machine. shall i do it now?

Truthfully it is probably a smart idea to return it, then figure out your budget and ask the members here at Anandtech for advice and then spend your monies more wisely.

Best buy is not renouned for the best deals.

Not just yet. I recommend you post a thread in General Hardware with your goals, budget, and skill set, and see what kind of recommendations people come up with first.

I assume you would be wary of assembling it yourself? 1200 will get you a pretty nice PC, but General Hardware is really the best place for this question.

You'll probably also need to decide how much of the budget you want to spend on peripherals, such as a big monitor, nice speakers, and a gaming mouse.

i got a big HD tv and i have recently figured out why my stupid golden HDMI cable wouldn't work and its due to the HDMI output next to the mother board which should of been connected to the video card i believe soooo i have to get a DVI cord that converts to HDMI and well the mouse and keyboard i got is decent and assembling a pc is tooo much for me and i love computers i just never really had the money for it until i obviously got older and have money to spend... but my problem is the virus protection thats why i went with best buy they give me these protections and stuff like that.... i am starting to get into this pc specs, but i am gonna take classes for this type of thing... but thanks to this forum.. i can get a hit on what to get and not...

oh, Alpha, Best Buy will take advantage of you for sure.
Avast Free Antivirus or any other free solution will be fine. Also downloading Malwarebytes is a good idea. Do not pay for their crappy virus solutions; its a waste of money.

If you want to get a good deal for gaming, you will have to build a desktop yourself.
There are relatively decent notebooks for $1k that provide decent gaming experiences.

NVIDIA: GTX 650 or above
AMD: 7770 or above

CPU: FX 6300 is the best bang for your buck. Newegg.com has all the materials you need, but if you can get a lot more advice in another forum if you are confused. Just keep asking questions; but Best Buy is a void of good advice.

With a $1200 budget, there's plenty of room for an i5 and a higher end video card.

Some of the suggestions in this thread are downright awful btw. The 5500 is more than good enough for gaming with a discrete card. It's not THAT bad Christ, it beats a Q6600 in every test thrown at it - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/676?vs=53

The first sensible suggestion would be to remove the goddam awful discrete card, try out the IGP, and if the IGP is still too slow just buy some discrete card like the 7850 for $130.

It is *highly* likely that an A8 5500 + 7850 is more than good enough for the OP, saving him over $1K in the process.

Yes return it now, that machine is very far from ideal for gaming. Then we can recommend something that actually works. This just demonstrates how electronics retailers have very little interest in helping customers make an informed choice.

Whether you should return the pc depends on what you paid. Definitely remove that video card and try gaming on the igp. It will be better, but still somewhat limited.

You would need to upgrade the power supply and add a decent video card like a hd7770 or 7850 to get a good performing system. That would cost an additional 150 to 200 dollars. If you paid around 500.00 or less for what you have, that comes to 700 total, which is not too bad. You could do better if you built your own, but it sounds like you are fairly new to computers, so I don't know if you want to do that.

Do you have a micro center nearby? They could give you better advice and have a better selection of parts. Best buy is OK to get a cheap, sale priced basic PC, but for a gaming PC, they are not likely to give a good result.
