Wait... You're trying to HELP her become a cop?

I thought perhaps you needed advice about how to talk her out of the worst career move possible.

Here's another one: NO WOMAN IS QUALIFIED TO BE A POLICE OFFICER.

While needing a few on the force since sometimes a woman can diffuse a situation better than a man can, but for the most part, I agree. I don't think it has to do with her abilities, it is just the simple fact a 5'2" woman isn't as intimidating as 5'10" man. There were a couple of local sudies and it turns out the women of the force had to pull their firearm almost 45% MORE times than their male counterparts.

I would have no problem with a woman being a police officer if they had to pass the same tests and be as physically strong as everyone else did. But they don't

Larger cities generally run academys to train. I would think it would be easier as a woman to get onto a force because of non-discrimination and diversity laws (as long as she's passing the tests). It is true though that many forces want you to have or be on your way to a bachelor's degree.

Some townships/cities also require that you are a resident of that town/city in order to be eligible for employment.

Best answer so far.

A friend of mine got accepted into her city's police academy. She was a real estate agent with no experience. She did well on her tests and was friendly with some of the city councilors who probably gave her a good word.

Best option would be to find a city with a police academy that will provide the training. How easy it will to get accepted will vary.

edit - this was Quincy, MA

Funny. I live in Quincy

Please. Most male cops I see are over weight and look like cheif wigam. Most women at least look like they could chase a perp for more then a city block beofre they had a heart attack.

Also a lot of places do test men and women the same now. And if they don;t all it takes is 1 male to sue saying its against the law. i.e. like the hooters lawsuit.

She could probably keep applying and have her name kept on file. Also, try a different city or state police department? Federal is probably impossible without previous experience.

I'm thinking of a career in law enforcement if I ever get my eyes fixed (-7.00 eyes don't cut it when you get de-glassed). My preference is federal (RCMP), provincial (OPP), then local (insert town + P).

Couldn't disagree more. Female's can make great officers, and can be horrible. Pretty much the same ratio as males. As far as a career it just depends on what you are looking for. Most important thing is enjoying what you do. Second the pay. Its not great not horrible but, at least in my department, outstanding benefits. Free insurance, they pay 6% into you 401k(not a match they just pay that much into it), and one of the best state pensions in the country with a city supplement to boot. Double time and a half on holidays is nice to. Finding a job with a pension these days is extremely difficult and makes up a lot for what your salary is. Figure what you would have to put away to have that much retirement income and you may be surprised. Full retirement at 55 is also another nice bonus. Your not going to get rich but there are far worse gigs out there but as I said enjoying what you do is the most important thing.

Yes I'm sure, in a life threatening situation, given the choice between a male and female partner, you would choose a female. Don't even bother with an LOL answer to that.

Despite our efforts to become completely altruistic, overlooking obvious differences between males and females in the name of fairness is retarded.

Also, becoming a police officer is automatically retarded.
