My friend who works for Chrysler just lost his job.

I got an email from him to call him back, so I did... and he said they let him go without any explanation, they didn't even say when his last day was. He unsure if he is working tomorrow or not.
How could a company do such thing right around the holidays?
Anyways I guess they are canning a bunch of people, something like 37% of some department.
But man...I guess working for big companies, or automotive industry is something.

He is left without a car now, his lease isn't up until Jan ... really shitty situation... moving in the middle of winter... I feel really sorry for him.

EDIT:He knew it could happen any time, but his attitude was.... Why would they let me go... I do more work than 5 people (direct hire employees). He was think he should get directed hired, but instead he will be without a pay check.

I should mention that he was a contract employee. So I guess I would stay away from contract jobs too.

I feel sorry for him, but thats the life of a contractor. They're basically well paid temps.

That sucks. This just pushes me away from working for big companies even further. I'm graduating this month and have high doubts about working for private/big companies. Maybe I'm different, I rather prefer a low pay but high job security than a high pay and low job security.

I would say large companies have more job security. Obviously not american auto companies but there are plenty of others.

True. He didn't work for Chrysler. Temps/contractors are the first to go because you don't have any HR stuff. Just "you're fired". no messy HR or documentation needed.

I work for a company that is very small ~12 people direct hires. Absolutely no bullshit is involved and I like it this was. I would not work for a huge company... I just wont.

The Holidays are actually a good time to get fired--there are plenty of retail outlets looking to hire extra help AND you get to spend more time with your family. Isn't *THAT* what the Holidays are all about? If he's really lucky, he might even get to work alongside his kids wrapping gifts at the mall--what could be more fun than that?

yeap. i know a few that work as temps in belvidare are the chrystler plant. they make good money. BUT they get laid off almost every winter. a few months later they get hired back.

I don't mean to be callous, but he's a contractor (aka temp). That's part of the territory. If his placement agency or his contracting company is good they'll find another company for him quickly. BTW, what does he do?

Sorry to hear about your friend but he was a contractor, aka a temp with good pay, that's all he is. He could be a great employee but the company could not keep him and fire other employees, especially the UAW.

Want more job security? Work for the government.

I was a gubmint sub-contractor for four years.
I got laid off at least once a year for a week minimum.

Oh he would tell you all about it... there are reasons behind that... bottom line it is shady how they do their fuel economy testing. There is way to make the car get the advertised mileage per gallon that it never really gets in real driving.
