My friend needs a new video card for Battle Field 2

I do not have his system specs. All I know is that he has onboard video. He wants a video card to play Battle Field 2, since this will be the main game he will be playing. He wants thew cheapest card he can get. I told him that he would be better getting a good video card in the $200-$350 range, but he wants it very cheap. Any suggestions?

low end : x800gto
mid range: 7600gt
high end: x1800xtx

obviously you can go 7900gtx or x1900xtx but those are out of the range you suggested.

7600GT is the best mid-range solution for now, but the ABSOLUTE lowest end you could go for BF2 = 9800 pro. in which, you could go looking for a good used 9800 pro from ebay or FS/FT forums. If he could shell out $230, it would be a VERY good investment and it would last that person much longer, the X1800XT is $230AR and plays any game at 1280x1024 with max settings and 4xAA/8xAF(maybe not FEAR or Oblivion though), and the best value in my opinion. A card of this power for $230 is an absolute steal. I would convince him to buy this, and if that fails, make SURE he/she gets at least a 7600GT. The used 9800 pro is just a backup where it won't last much longer.

This may be a stupid question, but are there special slots for PCI-express? Because if there are, Im not sure he would have them. Will that card fit in a normal pci slot?

No, it won't.

PCI-E card aren't compatable with PCI slots. Tell your friend he needs an AGP card. If all he has is PCI slots, he's getting a new computer.

Well, I'm pretty sure he only have AGP and PCI, so what AGP card should he be looking at?

the x850 pro agp was going for like 140 on the ati clearance center, I saw it in the deals section. The x850XL was like 105 or something. Anyways. I have a question of my own. What's a good PCI-E graphics card with no memory sharing, but is nothing fancy? I need it just to work for office applications, the occasional movie. I don't see myself playing games anytime soon. I'm sort of on a budget, and everything I save here goes for a better CPU, so I'd like to go bare minimum. Oh and quiet too if possible. Oh and it has to work for vista.

try finding a 6800GS AGP. it's based on the NV40 core which is capable of being unlocked to 6800 Ultra Extreme. fun modding IMO.

1280 x 1024 all medium no AA and no AF here with 9800 pro

I'm running at 1280X1024, high effects & texturing, medium textures, 2XAA here. Average 40FPS. Minimum FPS is about 35.

find out his specs and price range also what settings he would like to play

example if he has a 17'' LCD/CRT with a max res of 1280x1024 a low/mid card should be fine. if he has a 2001FP with a max res of 1600x1200 he's going to want to go with a higher end card.

edit: running an lcd at non-native res is a waste if you didn't know just thought i'd point that out just in case you didn't know

if he has agp then his only options imo would be a ati x800xtpe or x850xt, end of story. pick one up in the fs/ft section.

also he need at least 1GB of ram and find out what cpu he has.

i played bf2 fine for a while on a geforce fx 5500 w/ 256mb ram. that card is like $40 now. gameplay was smooth w/ video settings minimized.
