My friend just got back from UK

So my friend got back from the UK at 5:30am today and probably got home around 7am.

Later, he gets on the computer at 5pm and says "I should be asleep, it is midnight london time". I reply to that with a "WTF? 😕"

I've been to Europe a few times and each time I came home (I live in CO) it was never necessary for me to keep the same time. In fact, that defies all logic. When you are flying somewhere, aren't you supposed to not go to sleep until it is night locally?

And when you are changing time zones backwards, isn't it easier then going forwards?

CLIFFS:
Person gets back from london
goes to sleep at 6pm local time
stays on london time
WTF?

😕
Does that make sense to anyone?

Sounds like he's just making a comment that he'd be asleep if he was in London. I don't see a problem.

Well, his whole family was also asleep, and he went to sleep shortly after

You've never heard of jetlag?

Yes, but I thought that you where supposed to stay up until the night before going to bed when changing time zones 😕

Also, wiki says that traveling west to east, like london to denver, is easier then travel east to west.

Eh, it's not that weird. Everyone has their own way of dealing with jet lag. Personally, once I check in, I set my watch to local time at my final destination. It helps ease the transition and reduce jet lag.

have some drinks, go to sleep at midnight UK, wake up at 8AM local... ~15hr sleep.. good to go after that.

Your friend is right, he should have eased himself back into the time zone so jetlag doesn't zonk him. Plus he's probably been up a lot longer than ususal, so it's time for bed. Even if it's 5 pm.

Umm, isn't Denver west of London? Or are you flying the long way?

Like the OP, I always just push myself to stay up as late as possible, or sleep in as much as I need (or a combination). Either way, I'm usually fine around the next day and really don't experience jet lag too much. My wife, OTOH, gets murdered by jet lag. Just flying domestic cross-continental flights completely screws her up....it's weird.

Uh, Denver's West of London there, champ.

I've done plenty of global travelling for work. The best advice is to adapt to the local timezone upon arrival, sure it can suck for a day or two, but it is the quickest way to "combat" jet lag. Don't forget your body clock is tuned to light and dark (i.e. day and night).

Well duh, you're from there, of course you wouldn't see a problem. 😛
