he got his license a few days ago, and here in oregen there is a 6 months rule (nobody else in the car for the first 6 months), and of course he had me and another friend in the car, is driving around a residential area, peals out in front of a cop (it was dark out so we didn't know it), then proceeds to go 40 miles an hour in a 20 and not having his headlights on. He gets pulled over and the cop gives him a verbal warning. not even an hour later he gets pulled over AGAIN for not having headlights on AGAIN by the SAME COP! IDIOT! 141 dollar ticket.

he should have his license revoked before he kills himself

don't be with him when he kills himself, or you might die quizzelsnatch

Did you not notice he was driving without lights yourself?

Your friend is a moron, but that says something about you for having him as a friend, I am afraid to say.

it is to prevent the stupid crap that this kid did, trying to "show off" for friends and ending up dead

the theory is that 16 year olds drive slightly better when they are alone. put other kids in the car and they feel the need to "look cool" by driving with the lights off/speeding/etc, etc

6 months rule suck IMO, they need someone in the car to remind them to turn their light on..

But for an inexperienced driver, shouldn't he have somebody in the car for the first six months to help him make sure he doesn't do anything stupid? Like a parent or something in the front seat.

If it was that late out, how could any of the three people in the car NOT notice his lack of headlights being turned on.

Not only is your friend an idiot, but I think the other two people in the car with him are as well.

Well, in Texas anyway, that's what the permit period is for. If you're under 18, you must have your permit for six months before you can get your "real" license, and as such are legally required to have an adult over 21 in the passenger's seat during that time.

Edit: And IIRC, the "no other people in the car" rule when you get your license, at least here, only applies to minors I think. You could still drive around adults...the theory being that you wouldn't "show off" for them, I guess. :p

I'm kind of just going off my memory from driver's ed here; I didn't actually bother to get my license until I was 18 (wasn't getting a car until I graduated from HS anyway, no point in getting it earlier) - so I didn't have to worry about any of that.

yeah, wouldn't it make more sense if they change it to must have a person 21+ for 6 months with you?

as SynthDude2001 said, you get a permit that requires another licensed driver to be with you before you get your license
the driving alone for 6 months is after that period

in oregon at the age of 15 you can get your permit which means you have to have someone over 21 in the car with you while you drive, and they must be in the front seat. at the age of 16 you can drive on your own after you pass a drive test.

sorry i didn't explain earlier, i forgot that other states are different.

taking his license will only slow down the natural darwin process. I say give this kid a motorcycle and lets speed up the process.

That's why I love my Grand Am. It has a sensor and when it's too dark out the lights go on automatically. I've only had to turn them on manually half a dozen times when it's foggy or raining but not really dark....
