My friend has $5,000 to kill on a laptop. Any recommendations?

My friend, who some of you have seen in this prom pic of me and her, has $5,000 to waste into buying a new laptop. if not spent, it'll all go to waste. her uncle died and gave all the kids in the family $5000 to spend on a computer for school, and if not spent, will go to charity or sumthing. well, all she does on the computer are homework, chatting, myspace.com, and listening to music. i'd hate to have to spend so much on a laptop just for those reasons. and she only intends on getting a laptop, but other then that, she's not getting anything else (since she can get only 1 computer). i was looking into the lines of getting a pentium M 2.0ghz along with 1gb ram, and a 64mb video card, but in reality, she really only needs a $1000 comp. since she has the chance to take advantage of soo much money, she might as well. if you guys can help me decide on a laptop with long battery life, fast, and something that will last for a very long while (assuming 5 yrs), then it'd be great. i can easily just go to alienware or hp, but i cant seem to find the one with everything i want, especially a really great warranty. thanks. 🙂

Build a custom IBM Thinkpad T42 with 14.1", 1GB RAM, large hard drive, and get the optional high-capacity battery. Get the longest / best warranty, and Office Pro.

Second choice is a Dell Lattude 600 with similar specs, you might be able to get a longer / better warranty including coverage against accidents.

Also get accessories like software, spare battery, case, etc.

Let the leftover $2K or so go to charity, it's not a waste to fund a food bank.

i already thought of that, but she just wants to keep everything simple. and she's already rich up the butt. her dad's a lawyer and gives her everything she wants. 🙂

Would a $2500 PowerBook plus an iPod work?

i really want her to get that, but she's evil and dl's music, so that's a problem with gettting limewire or winmx on a mac. 🙁

for 5K?

VoodooPC, dock/port replicator, and LCD monitor.

VPC's are the best looking non-Apple laptops IMO, and if you're spending $5,000 you may as well make is a practical desktop replacement.

Get 2k worth of parts for yourself from newegg + spend 3k for the best ibm laptop (x40 is cool, small, and lasts forever on batt, plenty of power for office/music) with the 5 year warranty. Problem solved.

EDIT: Dont forget to hit it. A LOT

too bad i cant. she can only get 1 computer and that's it. 🙁

I'll sell her a 1000 laptop and claim it is worth 5000. Then I'll give her back 3000 cash and keep 1000 as my fee. Fair enough?

k, this is what i would get if it were me. here. what do you guys think? i like hp a lot and it's going to more then she'll need, but i'm still debating whether a pentium M would do better justice...

for 5k i'd get a better video card

hp's suck. Thinkpad all the way. I'd actually say since she's a girl, and wont likely really use any comp she gets get her an ibook or powerbook. Those are plenty sweet, in fact even if she was pretty savy and needed lots of features i'd still put the apple laptop in second against the thinkpad. apple cinnema display and ipod aren't too bad either. man 5k to blow wow.

The T42 and Dell I recommended are light and have good battery life. Unless she's going to give you that laptop you should help her get one to fit her own needs, not a desktop replacement monster.
