Pure speculation, but my guess is that the university gave that assignment to him as punishment. The corporation probably e-mailed the university saying user at IP xxx.xxx.xx.xx is distributing blah. I could be wrong, but the university probably did not divulge his personal information, and the corporation might be inclined to give a more severe punishment if they felt it was worth the effort to find out who he was.
