A good friend of mine got canned today. We both work for the same company. He was in shipping and they fired him because his manager thought he surfed the net too much. Not that he was late, or didn't do his job, or due to his attitude. He always did a great job, was in at least 10 minutes early each morning and kept everyone laughing. They always got all the work done and had almost half of every day free with nothing to do. What's a guy supposed to when he's got 3+ hours of everyday free to sit around but can't leave the building? He usually spent an hour or so studying or doing homework (he's in college still), which they must have thought was a threat or something since he wanted to be a tech but they kept him in shipping. Of course his manager got off scott free, lousy jerk...

So where's the best place to find a job online? I really want to help him out. His wife is going to flip out once he tells her. He's at school right now and we're trying to find him something in the IT field but not having much luck so far. Ideas? Suggestions?

Apparently they did talk to him briefly in October about it, but they cut the meeting short when he wanted to talk about how much his manager surfs or how his manager has a really nasty and firy attitude when he doesn't get his way. Seems to be a common occurance at this company. We recently had one of the people who helped start the company leave due to internal issues... Just makes me want to leave more and more only I've got it pretty good. But who knows anymore...

Damn, that's gonna suck on a resume. And I do know about having idle hands. I run CNC and am constantly being harped at about keeping busy with something other than reading newspapers and magazines.

I usually side with management when it comes to people not doing what they're told. Pointing fingers at others for doing the same thing hardly ever works either. I'm sure management is aware of who does what. But it's their show, and they can run it their way. He may have legal recourse, but that's a lame way to go about it. Probably wouldn't look good to a future employer either.

Speaking of other employers, I'd rather walk into local establishments and set up a meeting that way, than over the web. There must be places nearby that he would like to work at. It's also a real good idea to pull strings to get in somewhere. Much better success rate that way. Ask some friends, old teachers or professors if they have any leads. Not to mention family. Hey, it's the way of the world. How do you think his manager got the job?

Yes, we discussed the legal recourse route tonight but I don't think he'll take it. Not because he doesn't have merit (in things not disussed here), but he doesn't have the money or time right now to go down that road. I don't know how his manager got his job or keeps it. No-one in the service dept. likes him, especially those of us with any pull. (myself included!)

Oh well, the hunt is on for another job. I feel bad for him, especially since his birthday is this Saturday and a bit angry because in order for something to change at that company it's going to take something BIG to happen.
