sounds like you have a four pronged ring. that sucks.

Whats wrong with a four prong?

KK

Depending on the size of the stone, the 4-prong may not be enough to hold it in under stress. I wanted a 4-prong for my fiance's ring (just over 1 carat), but the jeweler strongly advised me to get a 6-prong setting. It ends up being a lot more secure that way.

If one of the 6 prongs bends/breaks, the stone will not fall out. If one of four prongs bends/breaks, there goes your stone.

My wife has a 4 prong platinum setting, hopefully the platinum won't bend or break. I'd be thoroughly pissed if something happened to it.

So what do you do about non-round settings?

I have one word for you:
Insurance. for high value items like rings, you should always have a rider on your home, renters, condo insurance for it.
A Scheduled Personal Property rider will cover it no matter what happens to it. if it gets lost, stolen, falls downt the garbage disposal, whatever. sure there is come coverage on your HO insurance, but you have to pay your deductable and often times, it will not cover hardly any occurance short of theft or fire.
And, PS, dont blame your fiance.

Is it platinum? If so, platinum is much softer and malleable than white gold which may be the reason why the diamond fell off so easily. I've talked to jewelers who recommend white gold over platinum just due to the fact that it is more rigid.

Well the diamond may not be cheap but the jeweler sounds like he cut corners with the setting. My wife's engagement ring lost (gone, on the streets of San Francisco), a side diamond. He replaced it at no charge. He said it was his fault the diamond came out. I never bought any extra insurance on the ring either. Never go diamond shopping at a mall or big chain they get what they get and are forced to sell the crap. Go to a reputable jeweler. Mine is the local distributor for all Diamonds in the region, so ALL diamonds sold in this area are looked at him first. Find a guy like that.

WRONG! Well get the right 4 prong (bakers something) and it's much better. Besides how ugly is the diamond that you want to hide it with 2 unnecessary prongs?

WHAT!?!?! You better fart soon because the blew a ton of smoke up there. They have it backwards. Plus Platinum is far more expensive than white gold. Wonder why they would tell you such a thing?

I wouldn't want to marry someone who talked like that behind my back.

For real. Every other thread from this guys is about his fiance
Maybe the dingo ate his baby.

Like everyone else has said, get a 6-prong setting. MUCH more secure.
