MY forums hacked and deleted? Recourse?

Well, I had the pleasure of logging onto my formums this evening only to find they had been hacked. All Groups had been deleted as well as some user accounts. When I was finally able to get in I went through the log files and came up with an IP. Also happen to have an IRC channel. Matched the IP to one of the users in the channel. It is someone I know.

I confronted him about it on AIM and he did admit to doing it after I threatened legal action as well as admitting it to a few others. My main question is do I have any legal recourse at all? I have the log files from the forums, I have IRC log files, and I have AIM log files where he admitted it.

I am not that terribly upset about it and it can be rebuilt pretty easily but I would like to teach this kid a lesson. Of course I could do it the easy way by slipping a friend a few bucks to take care of it for me but just curious if there was anything illegal about what he did. Thanks for your input on this.

It was and is secured. He managed to steal a pass of one of my admins through a game server. Stuff happens I know, just curious.

Well, there's nothing stopping you from bringing a civil suit against him...
If you don't mind spending a few hundred on a lawyer to get, I dunno, maybe $50 in damages if you're amazingly lucky.

Maybe you should get smarter admins.

Then it wasn't really secured, was it? That's like getting a car alarm and then leaving the keys sitting on the roof.

repost.

what would you sue him for, pain and suffering? the little time that it takes to rebuild it?

in this case a good butt whoopin is best.

What kind of forum was it? High volume like AT? Then I would do something legally about it. If not, its not worth it. Next time use a password that he can't get. And he didn't hack anything he got your password from someone else, how is that hacking? :|

I would go for the ass whooping. I am sure he broke some type of law, but this was not a business just a hobby I assume? If so, with no money loss involved the authorities probably won't do squat.

Unauthorized use of a computer system is against the law.

Just restore from backup and go on with life. And change your password.

(No backup? I thought so.)

so then it wasn't secured.

how does stealing someone's password from somewhere else make the server in question 'not' secure? they didn't hack into the box and steal the pass, they lifted it off somewhere else and used it. blame the other admin for using the same pass all over the place. again, doesn't mean the box is insecure.

There should be ONLY one ADMINISTRATOR, aka SUPERUSER. Others have "admin like" rights, but not enough to do serious damage like the King. 🙂

Two can keep a secret if one of them are dead.

send the logs and a report to his isp and have his account cancelled.

Ass kicking is a little extreme. If you know who he is and where he is, maybe just "hack" his car a bit....or something along those lines.

I appreciate all the input but now that I have cooled off it looks like it would be easier to take care of it myself. It was a small forum and can be easily restored from backup but it was just the principle of the matter. Oh well, time to make some phone calls.

YEah, if you moderators had that kind of access you deserve to get hacked.

PEople are the biggest security problem on every network.

This late in the game you probably have no real legal options. You should have called the police immediately. But you can still try.

Send everything you have to the FBI and his ISP.

If you don't all he will do is do it again and again and again.........

FBI won't touch it. The monetary figure for the FBI is somewhere over $5k.
