It says that freezing fish isn't painless.

yeah, well they are liars ;)

if you leave it in the same temperature water, it gradually gets colder. Whenever I take a shower and gradually turn it colder its not a shock to my system as if I were jumping right into much colder water.

It's stupid to think it would be painless, unless you're using liquid nitrogen or something. It's not like the water freezes fast in your freezer.

shoot change my vote from garbage disposal to freezing him.

Though I supose if he suffered pain in the garbage disposal it would only be for a split second.

Seems like a no brainer.

the thing with fish is that you just can't stick him on a leash and put him in the passenger seat with you. maybe you could coax it to swim in the windshield fluid reservoir for a bit but that could get nasty.

Man, a garbage disposal?! That's violent and cruel as hell. I've always gone with the toilet. A hammer wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm not trying to be cruel or anything but if you smash it nice and fast, he feels nothing. You tear him up into little pieces, I bet he'll feel that longer.

HAha.... yeah... that was me.

It is a general concensus that you should put him in a bowl of water and put it in the freezer overnight.

Don't SHOCK FREEZE him like I did by dropping him in a bowl of ice and water.

That site said not to freeze the fish.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would think freezing to death is painless. Are you all stupid? I'd like to see you all die a painless death if I put you in a freezer. It won't happen. Freezing is not fun.

I say do the poisoning thing. It's painless for convicts isn't it?

Freezing makes you tired, your body goes numb, then you fall asleep and don't wake up. Have you ever seen Titanic?

Freeze him!

When I was in the fish hobby, freezing was the recommended way to eunthanize a fish, like the others have said do it gradually. As far as I know, freezing is still the recommended way of euthanizing fish. Though before you try that, have you used any medications yet, if not what are the symptoms and what type of fish is it. Maybe I missed it, but everyone seems to be assuming it is a beta.

You do realize that humans are warm blooded and fish are cold blooded right? Cold blooded creatures change their body temp to match their surroundings. Therefore if you slowly make the water colder and colder it would be much less painful on a fish than if you dropped it in almost freezing cold water. When putting a cold blooded creature in gradually colder water that thing may not even notice a large temperature change, the organs would just eventually slow down and stop working. Comparing it to putting a person in a freezer is just ignorant.

edit: dang I just realized this thread was OLD!!

I would go to a fish store, talk to the people workign there, explian the fish's symptoms, and ask if they had anything that might help it heal.

But go ahead and throw it down the garbage disposal.

I'm sure it will feel great getting ground into a pulp.... probably a lot like going through a woodchipper.
