My first stab at a point to point wireless connection

I'm looking to setup a PTP connection between 2 locations approximately .25 miles apart. The antenna will be mounted below the tree tops (unless there is no way to make it work this way). My estimate is that there are 6-12 trees in the line.

I'd like a 10+Mb (fixed typo) connection and some level of security. The traffic isn't top secret info but some personal info will be transmitted. The link will essentially be used to create an offsite data backup and to allow me to remotely manage the network on the other end.

I'm considering the Netgear WG102 and the Netgear ANT24D18. The WG102 claims to have a maximum speed of 108Mbps and WPA authentication. The ANT24D18 claims to have a 10 Mile maximum range in ideal conditions.

1. Is this equipment likely to establish a connection even through some tree coverage?
2. Should I feel secure with the security? Should I use VPN for security? Is it worth the cost?
3. Do I want some kind of fiber (or other lightning isolation) isolation?
4. Is there cheaper or other equipment better suited for what I'm doing here?
5. Is there anything else I seem to be missing here?
 
Couple of things. At a quarter mile you'll have line of sight or you'll have no link. Secondly, I can only assume you mean 10 Mb, small b. Witha perfect link you'll see in the neighborhood of 30 Mb with the .11g gear, maybe 35 or a bit more with the "turbo G" 108 Mb stuff. You won't want to use a channel bonding turbo solution with a point to point however so just figure 20-30 Mb with standard .11g and a perfect link. Above the trees.
 
Perfect line of sight huh? The equipment says 10 miles with perfect conditions so I thought it might work.

10 miles? It depends a lot on LOS. With my Netgear router, three walls meant a very low signal, despite the linear distance being less than 50 ft. That directional attenna might do the trick. Though I do believe both the router and the antenna are quiet teh $.

I'm sure the antenna makes a huge difference. The question is will it be enough?

For the record, I've put up about 150 point to point and point to multipoint wireless links. It isn't about thinking that won't work. Now, I haven't seen the site so maybe IF, through the trees, you have a visual to the remote location then you'd have a narrow shot at making it work. Line of site is not the only issue with PtoP links. Google fresnel zone or fresnel zone clearance. If you have multiple trees directly in the path, then it WILL NOT happen, regardless of the gain and quality of your directional antenna. Period
