Ok so I just started at Auburn this fall to get my M.S. in CS. Anyways, last semester I wrote a research paper for a computer and network security class I took. It was on the use of statistical modeling and monte carlo simulations in determining information security budgeting and ROIs. So yeah I submitted it to a conference with some help from a prof and I just found out (pending some suggested changes which I think are good ones) it's been accepted! Best part is the prof told me he'd be too busy to present so he wants me to get flown up and present the paper!! Yeah!!

EDIT: I r teh spell gud

Conference proceedings are not as highly regarded as real peer-reviewed publications. I assume you are going to try to get it into one of the IEEE journals? I do know how you feel though, my first publication and conference presentation was when i was an undergrad. Fortunately, they were nice and didnt tear me to shreds. Back then i really didnt know what i was talking about. ;)

Haha yeah I'm kinda hoping the same thing here. It's a business modeling and sim conference so I know about what's in the paper but hopefully they aren't going to grill me about a bunch of the business junk seeing as how I'm CS. As far as IEEE or something I'm not certain. It's really a business paper that has to do with spending on IT so I'm not certain if I could get it published there or not and I know nothing of the business journals.

As an undergrad I started as a theatre major and I did a LOT of theatre and competition monologues/one-acts in highschool. I love being in front of people. I am so excited!!

Yeah I got sick of the politics in theatre and having to kiss everyone's ass all of the time plus I knew I wanted a family and a steady job one day. I was playing CAL-IM at the time for CS and my roommate's friend was a CS major and he kinda got me into it so I switched.

Wait you just used CS for Counter-Strike and then CS for Computer Science. Are you sure you aren't just a Counter-Strike major and you're flying up to compete in a CAL event? You can tell us the truth...

where is the conference? Most I went to to present were in Chicago and St Paul in early spring (read: damn cold weather).

My professors and managers became suddenly un-busy when it would be revealed that conferences were to be held at Disney, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. :(

EDIT:Ooops, forgot to say, congrats!

You should thank said friend every day for as long as you shall live. I graduated Auburn in 02, and the last theater graduate I ran across was waiting tables at Applebees.

That actually depends on the area. In areas where the development proceeds very quickly, like with say graphics or some CS areas, the conferences are the most prestigious and useful means of publication. The reason being that the peer review and publishing process of journals can be too long, resulting in the publications being more or less outdated by the time they are disseminated.

Still, conferences are pretty neat to go to. I went up to Ottawa for URSI over the summer and it was a nice change of things. I missed the deadline for APS this year but it's not it's going to be in Hawaii like it was the year before.

It's going to be in Ottowa Canada. In fact here's a link:

And I WISH I was a pro gamer. :p Nay, I am a lowly CoD4 noob now.

Just a few blocks where they had URSI. That conference was in the hotel that is just on the west side of the Rideau Canal on Rideau. Nice place. Check out the Parliament while you're there and there was some decent pub food along Elgin.
