I'm doing my first overnight shift at work tonight, doing it over a period of 2 weeks. Have my bag of chips, my unlimited supply of coffee, and a few poker books to keep me occupied with a TV on the side if I need, while I have sites like ATOT too. Who else is at work doing an overnight? Enjoy it a lot or do you want to kill yourself?

What job? I've worked late night shifts at my retail job (though not graveyard yet) but this isn't the kind of job where even the graveyard shift would allow you to slack off and relax.

I wish I could find something like this, where I could work part time so I could still wake up for class.

im working the nightshift tomorrow. I could never decide if it was better to stay up through the night, or try and get a couple hours of rest.

'Tech support', call centre environment. I mean I do have the odd call every hour or two and if things go haywire I'd get busy very fast, but for the most part I'm here 'just in case' since we are 24/7 support. I'm the only one here at the moment other then security and some maintenance workers in the building.

We have this at my work too, however it's DSL tech support. I think it would alright for a while but I would probably end up wanting to sleep since the call center is dead in the late hours.

I drove semi from 5p-5a for 3.5 years. No sleeping unless I was stopped.

Unfortunately only time I am at work overnight nowadays is when we gotta crunch for a deadline and something screwed up.

Though there have been a couple of times I was simply tired and slept in our sleep room for the night. Wake up and take a shower and eat breakfast all without ever leaving work, I always keep a few sets of clothes here as well as everyone else lol.

Been working 5th shift (7pm til 8am) for almost 6 years. I've changed jobs and tonight we're running End of Month/Beginning of Month jobs, so I'm hopping between consoles for most of the night. Usually there isn't much to do after Friday night except monitor queues and balance CPU loads for most of the night. I've completely read through the Sword of Truth series recently and have picked up the 4 book series "The Heritage of Shannara".

I'd recommend nuts to chew on and Sudoku to keep the mind sharp. That TV will only lul you into a zombie like state that will be hard to pull out of once your boss comes in and sees you with your feet up snoring away.

Load balancing would seem like a relatively simple task to automate no?

I'm not ashamed to admit that my mind went places it shouldn't have.

I worked at a call center years ago right out of high school, and worked 3rd shift for the Ryder trucking breakdown line. Nights were sometimes slow, and I can remember a few times where I crawled up under my desk and took a nap, only to have the ding in my ear wake me up when a call was coming in. Most of the time I was on IRC chatting away, even while on a call.
