My first impression of iPhone update 1.1.3

I've been playing with the 1.1.3 update since it was released a few hours ago.
So far the new features are pretty nice.

  • Home Screen Customization

Being able to move icons around is nice. I rearranged the icons on my dock (You can still only have 4 dock icons). Moved some icons that I don't use to the second page. From my brief testing it appears that you can have as many pages on your home screen as you like (I got bored after 6 or 7).

You can also create web shortcuts on your home screen now from safari. For example I added a shortcut to the Google mobile apps page so I can quickly check Gmail, calendar, reader, docs, etc.

  • Google maps update
The new location feature is pretty nice. Not quite GPS but it gets you pretty close.
I'm in an area with less than stellar cell coverage and it put me on the map fairly accurately. The circle it put me in looked to be about a 1/4-1/2 mile radius. You can then drop a pin on the map and drag it to a more accurate location. It will give you directions to or from this point or let you add it to your contacts.

  • Multiple SMS recipients
This is a much needed feature and should have been available sooner, but better late than never I guess.

Over all nothing mind blowing but the 162 meg download was worth it.

If you are anything like me you'll waste a few hours just getting the order of your icons just the way you want them. I've already re-organized them about 4 times!!

*UPDATE* - First bug found.

Mail is counting every unread message in my Gmail IMAP inbox twice.

If I have 1 unread message is shows a 2 on the mail icon, etc.

With every passing day I want an iPhone more and more.. I'm holding out for 3G though. I have to, can't afford it right now. 😉

Thanks for the review, sounds brilliant!

Maybe its the OCD in me but I really like the look of the Home Screen now that I can fill it out with web links and move the camera and photos to page 2 since I don't use them that much. I always thought the empty row and then later Itunes Wifi looked odd by itself. I love the GSM triangulation. So many times I can remember sitting in traffic and wanting to check how much farther the slowing will be and have to enter the freeway or address. Now I can just triangulate my location and get the traffic info much faster. I honestly can't see how i can I could go back to a different phone because I'm so used to the features I get with my iphone.

Anyone try the WiFi location finding with the iPod Touch yet? I can't imagine it working in the boonies very well, but it seems interesting...

As an iPhone user I am still pretty pissed that there isn't a version of iChat yet. Still no copy/paste?

I even unlocked my phone and I still can't use google talk. That is probably the main reason I am going back to blackberry.

Ya, Jobs kinda' iphailed this year..........YIKES!!!

Most of us Touch folks are staying jailbroken in 1.1.2. There just ain't anything in 1.1.3 worth writing home about.

It seems like just about everything leaked accurately this year. Too bad for Jobs. He may need to retool MW next year.

We'll have to wait & see what new apps prevail. I dunno....it sounds pretty grim for the future unless one of the contracted 3rd parties comes out w/ something truuuuuuuuuuuly irresistable.

For now..........iPhysics....FTW!!!!!!!!! 😎

I am kind of unhappy apple wants us to shell out an extra 20 bucks for the 1.1.3 update for the touch. i already had those apps by jailbreaking my thing, and the only new innovation is the ability to move around the icons. plist editing is annoying, but i'm willing to live with it for 20 bucks.

Plist editing? Just use Customize.app

I found the cause of my bug. Apparently on my first sync with 1.1.3 it added a second copy of my Gmail account to the phone thus causing the count to double.

Jobs failed? Your bar is stupid high.

updating to 1.1.3 completely hosed my unhacked iPhone! It says "Invalid SIM" though the SIM works in other AT&T phones. I'm gong to have to go to the Apple store to take care of it. A bit of the pain, but overall i love the iPhone.

Mine seemed to be dead after the update. Had to restart it a few times, but it finally came back to life.

just awaiting the new apple applications like an aim feature. Video recorder, voice recorder, etc.

Btw anyone know how to read th new traffic info on the new maps? Where/how does it show good/bad traffic on highways?

You can see the benefit with the iPhone. When I have my phone authorized to access my wireless network, the precision of its crosshairs improves dramatically.

Also, you can have 9 home screen pages max.

yea but what do u put on those screens? All I got are 3 shortcuts to webpages that I use. They def. Need somthing for aim users!!!

Yes........he did!

He's always had a confidential mystique surrounding MW & this year that mystique was completely leaked by all Apple related websites before the doors ever opened at MW!

On top of this..........consider that the released were not that impressive. Touch stuff had already been hacked to death. (Consider that JBroken Touches are still miles ahead of what you can get in a 1.1.3 Touch.....and that's already been broken by elite/dev team)

Then add the fact that while the new thin book is neat.........it's old hat. In *this* regard.....Jobs is playing catchup. Thin/light books have been in PC's forever. And you won't catch any power users using the new book.........it just ain't powerful enough.

If you eliminate my opinion of MW not being that impressive this year..........then at the very least...........Jobby boy needs to one-up his confidentiality so that NOTHING gets leaked in 2009.

IMHO..........the three most disappointing events to start off the year.......

1.) CES
2.) MW
3.) Detroit auto show

While I do not agree with you in the sense that Jobs failed at MW2008, I do agree with you about the three most disappointing events this year so far..... CES and MW. CES was a total flop and MW was just a pathetic excuse (the keynote). With that said, it would have been nearly impossible for Jobs to please every critic this year regarding new products and/or updates. MB Air is not a product that consumers will be lining up to buy as they did for the iphone last June for a few reasons specifically its price point and the fact this it is really targeted towards people who already have a main notebook/desktop solution and want a super portable, bare-bones notebook. As I said, this creates a problem for apple who focuses on mass sales because with the iphone, even at $600, people were willing to spend that kind of money on what is essentially a mobile phone with internet capabilities. In the case of the MBAir, consumers may be attracted to the styling but in terms of functianality, they will all find some problem.

I guess my point with this is that Apple's recent new products (iPhone, Apple TV (Take 2 included), MB Air, iPod Touch) they are essentially just toys whereas their computers are just that, computers. I have an iphone but as much as I enjoy it, it is a LOUSY cellphone and pretty much all of its features are just toy-like.

IMO, the latest firmware (1.1.3) is just as unexciting as Steve's keynote announcements last Tuesday. I personally have no reason (other than mild curiosity to try the Google maps triangulation) to upgrade to 1.1.3, well maybe to see if any of the bugs are fixed. For months I have been able to do pretty much everything this update brings, plus I have iSolitaire (the best game available for iPhone).

One more thing while im going...$20 for the Touch update?? Yea I know this is bullsh!t, of course it should be free but from apple's point of view, they have always had to distinguish iphones and ipod touches for the sake of making more iphone sales which is why the touch initially had no email, calender edit, etc...

sorry if that was long...its been years since I been on these boards...
