My First Gaming PC. HELP

aaa187

Junior Member
My Laptops motherboard/graphics died so I decided to build my own gaming PC after that.

I have a budget of about $550 for the PC build without the graphics card. I will use it with my HDTV for now. I really need a PC right now but I can put gaming off for a while to find a good deal/better card, preferably Nvidia. I want something that I can upgrade years later down the road so I don't have to plunk down another $550 or so just to upgrade everything.

Here is what I came up with some help from other forums, I put this together. I really don't know much when it comes to hardware so the more input the better. I may want something that can run Battlefield 3 at 50+ FPS. Like I said, I will wait for a graphics card to make that possible.

Eh, I'm not convinced the Silencer is any better than the Antec. What do you base that on? I agree the price is tempting if one likes rebates.

Agreed on the hard drive. That WD is meant as a media storage drive. Wrong choice as a OS drive. I'd personally go for this $75 Western Digital Blue over the Seagate though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822236339

BP Plus are among Antec's most basic PSUs, and while they're good quality, they are still basic units. Reasons why the Silencer is better:

1. Warranty: 5-year vs 3-year
2. PCIe connectors: 2x (6+2)pin vs. 6-pin + (6+2)pin
3. +12V rating: 456W vs 384W
4. Rated output: Continuous 500W @ 50C vs. no information
5. Capacitors: Japanese rated at 105C vs. no information
6. Efficiency: 80 Plus Bronze vs. 80 Plus

Those are pretty good reasons to favor the Silencer. I guess I still view that line as somewhat unproven since they were bought out (by OCZ). I certainly wouldn't buy their more expensive products, for example the 910w unit that got pretty lukewarm reviews: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4441/pc-power-cooling-silencer-760w-910w

This PSU review database disagrees... the Silencer 910W got excellent reviews

hardwaresecrets: Golden award
JonnyGuru: Performance 10/10, total 9/10
hardOCP: Pass (which in hardOCP-talk means "awesome product")

Mostly they complained about how loud it was which is disappointing for a product named "Silencer"

No, whish I did though.

Thanks for the help,

I grabbed your help and others from different forums and this is the mash up that I created. Trying to stick to about $550 or less.

That's actually a very nice combo. Unlike most of the combos Newegg sells, it doesn't throw in some junk like $40 antivirus or a $50 game from 2008 and give you a "$60 discount."

You're buying a higher end motherboard and a better PSU (Rosewill, but still ok, actually). You're not saving any money over the other build, but you're getting the ability to run full-speed crossfire/SLI with that motherboard and PSU. You'll still need a hard drive, and the Samsung 320GB you picked is pretty good. If you can stretch buy that and a small SSD, like this Samsung 64GB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820147162

This build is OK, but you can do better:
- RAM: GeIL DDR3 1333 8GB for $33 saves you a few bucks and loses the tall heatspreaders that just get in the way.
- ODD : Good
- Case: I think it's hideous, but it looks like a decent value if you like the looks
- PSU: Silencer Mk III 500W $45 AR like lehtv suggested
- CPU & mobo: Combo the i5 3570K with the ASRock Z77 Pro3 for $297 AP
- HDD : Really bad $/GB, but it is a short stroked 640GB platter, so it should be fast
