My wife and I were in Home Depot yesterday looking at lights to replace several of the ones in our house. We wanted to get one main light fixture, with three matched light fixtures for a living room with the adjoining hall, foyer, and landing.

Like usual, no salespeople were to be found, so we wandered around the lighting department for 15-20 minutes looking at their selection. We found a couple of fixtures we liked, but we couldn't tell for sure if their colors matched. Since nobody was available to help us, I found one of those stockboy's ladder/stairs things and used it to get a closer look at one of the fixtures.

Suddenly, out of nowhere an older guy with a bad combover shows up and asks if he can help us. I said "no, we're just trying to match some colors". Then he says (with a really angry tone) "you aren't supposed to be on that ladder". I politely told him we were done, and I immediately left their store and bought my light fixtures elsewhere.

What the crap??!??!?? I mean, first you can't find the time to actually help me, then you decide to scold me in front of my wife? You don't deserve my business.

Sorry, but I recently had a separate bad experience at Home Depot that had already tainted my opinion of them. I guess I should have mentioned that.

Uhh...actually, you were in the wrong.

Sure, no one was there to "help" you but, that also doesn't mean that you can start climbing on the ladders at will...that ladder should have had a sign saying, "Don't climb on the ladder moron!"....

And if I was on a ladder I'd just say "hey, if you had sent someone over to help me when I needed help, I wouldn't be on this ladder doing your job, now would I? Consider this free labor. I'll start billing you if you don't leave me alone. I'll be done in a few minutes anyway. Keep your pants on."

Thank Bob Nardelli. He ruined Home Depot.

BTW customers can use the small yellow or green ladders. The large orange ones are for associate use only.

I can always find an associate at any store BTW. They are not in every aisle, but come on, it isn't that hard. I for one don't like being hounded every step that I take in a store like a car dealership.

Yes - I was in the wrong by being on the ladder. That still doesn't excuse the fact that 1) for 15-20 minutes I couldn't find a single salesperson on the floor (and yes, I looked hard), and 2) the salesperson could have handled the situation with courtesy and tact.

Well he had good reason to, if you fell you could have sued.

I can never find an associate at my Home Depot. I guess they're all outside taking a smoke break every time I go there.

Thanks for the tip. Next time I need to find a Home Depot employee I'll climb their ladder and watch for one to magically appear :)

does it really matter that it was "in front of your wife"

are you afraid of your wife or something? get off the ladder before you hurt yourself and sue the store for your dumbassedness.

I expect Home Depot to suck so now when I have to go there it does not bother me that they suck so much. I shop at Lowes most of the time but on a few items I use a lot of HD has some brands Lowes does not and they are a lot cheaper so I bite the bullet and enter hell.

Laptop computers discounted at Home Depot

They were having a parking lot sale at our local Home Depot last month. They were selling Dell laptop computers for as low as $100. They were concrete bricks wrapped in bubble wrap and shrink wrap with Dell stickers all over them. They were being sold out of the trunk of a car. I think it's amazing that Home Depot allows this to happen.

I just tired of doing major home projects and trying to return what was not needed to Home Depot. If one receipt is missing you're out of luck because all they will give you is a gift card and I don't shop there anymore.

Wait, I am confused. You were a dumbass, and got called on it. Then you blame the store you were in because you were emasculated in front of your wife. What are you, stupid? Trust me, she already knows how dumb you are, and the size of your penis.

I think I am required to post in this thread.

Home Depot is an awesome place. I go whenever possible, even if I'm not buying anything. The smell of wood alone is enough to overpower me.

Home Depot rules.

Maybe you should hit the Sears or something. You have to remember Home Depot is kind of a mix place. Not quite as friendly for the casual buyer. It leans more towards the serious people who know what they want already and are contractors there to get everything in one place. Or hardcore do it yourselfers. So it can be a little rough around the edges for your average casual person. But it's still a great place. I'll keep all the great prices, the super convenience or everything being there, the great selection etc than give that up so it can be like a k-mart or something.

By the way all you have to do is walk down any other isle and just ask them "excuse me is there someone that is free to help me with "so and so section". If they cant they will go find someone for you. Thats pretty much all it takes. They always have something to do if they aren't helping a customer. It's really not that big a deal.

Lowes > Home Depot.

I used to love HD, but they suck now.

They even know it, that's why they are going to go back to having full-time employees instead of part-time.

When's the last time you saw many HD employees wearing that "I'm also an owner" sign they used to wear?

As someone mentioned before, Bob Nardelli ruined Home Depot, and Lowes is now spanking their asses because of it.

Every single HD around here is dirty, cluttered, and lacking help.

Every Lowes is clean, has plenty of help, and very roomy...doesn't have stock lying around waiting to be put up.

HD better get on the ball, quick.

I happen to have just started about three weeks ago, and no, you're not supposed to be on the ladders. Some idiot customer busted his nose/half of his face trying to get to the top shelf himself......it is sometimes difficult to find an orange apron, but it's not like they're camo, associates don't TRY and hide, often we get sucked away from our own department from people looking for employees in other departments.....vicious cycle. Oh well, i've dealt with a lot of dick customers.....so we're even ;)
