I want to bid on something but everytime I do..it says I am out bid...why isn't the out bid price already posted instead of me out bidding myself..did that make sense

Let's say the current high bid on an item is $20. I bid $50. The bid will show as $21. If you come along and bid $35, ebay will use my max bid and automatically raise my bid to $36, stomping your foolish low bid into the ground.

It isn't posted, because the seller or a friend could bid from another account at just below your bid, to make more money.

can you explain why if you bid $50 it shows up as $21

You put in a max bid of $50. The seller sets a bid increments, so when you originally bid, your bid price is the lowest possible winning bid. The bid price you put in is supposed to be the max you are willing to pay, but I've found that it doesn't pay to bid high right away.

alright that makes sense...but it still sucks inching your way to a proxy bid.

Well, why don't you make a proxy bid yourself? So you don't have to bid repeatedly.

cause I am a cheapass and don't want to pay a penny more than I need to.

😀

Ahhh, I see. I've noticed that lot of bidders are proxy bidding.
So, that is what I usually doing, as long as I don't get into a price war.😛

Can you bid on things up to the last minute? I don't want to get in a price war and want to sneak a final bid one minute before it's over...does that work?

Yep. Anything I bid on I usually do in the last twenty seconds. Haven't lost an auction yet.

Uh yes, that's exactly the point of a proxy bid. It won't make you pay a penny (or dollar, or whatever the increment is) more than you need to.

bentwookie - Proxy bidding is a joke especially if YOU'RE proxy bidding and another bidder is doing it as well. Two proxy bidders trying to outbid each other, inflating the price, before you know it you're paying RETAIL for the item! Argh, that is BAD BAD BAD!
