Aha! Found what I was looking for. Here's mileage guidelines for...

Completing your first century.

Completing your first century with strength to spare.

Obviously, you don't have to follow this to the letter, but this is a good starting point.
Maybe a stupid question, but why do none of these training programs build you up to complete a century on your own terms before the actual event?

Then the real even would be kind of anti-climactic :p
Besides, it's more fun with sag stops every 15-20 miles!

100 miles? WTF, I did that when I was 15 a bunch of times. Rode from Ukiah to Santa Cruz on a mountain bike in like 5 days.

I'm gearing up for a 100 mile RUN.

I'm pushing 50, 100 miles is a big deal to me.

Then

Still, you'll probaly find 100 miles very doable. Just get it in a gear that's comfortable and you should be able ride all day provided you keep yourself hydrated and fed.
I think she meant that she's pushing 50 in age, not miles.:Q I have my flame resistant suit on though, just in case.;)

The south shore (I assume they will be riding on 3A down to the Cape) is very flat as is the cape itself(assuming you will be riding on 6A) It should not be that bad at all.

The event is on may 21st which should be decent weatherwise, not too cold, nor too hot
I've got a gel seat and will probably also pick up some padded bike pants.

We get a police escort and I don't believe there's a whole ton of bad hills on this run.

I'm looking forward to this for some odd reason

Geekbabe, gel seats are BAD. They are comfy for a little while, then your butt muscles end up moving the gel around and you will die a horrific death after 20 miles. Get something like this and break it in good.

Do not skimp on cycling shorts. Expect to spend at least 50-100 bucks for good ones.

Get a camelbak or some other backpack drinking system. Much better than reaching down to grab a bottle.

Do you have clipless pedals and cycling shoes? Those really help with power transfer.

Other than that, ride, ride, and ride some more.

The assumption is that this is someone's first century, so they kind of build you up to it. Plus, doing 100 miles by yourself would be kind of discouraging for the average person as the time goes by a LOT slower without other riders around. The program builds your base fitness so you're capable of doing 100 and then the actual century is your "payoff" event. :)
