My first credit card dispute..

Begin Monday morning rant.

Going through my monthly statement and a charge for $2000 shows up at a Lowe's store in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. (I live in Illinois, I've never been to Lowe's, I've never even been to Bloomfield Hills MI). I figure no problem, send in the dispute form and it will be handled appropriately.

To my shock I get letter 2 weeks later saying that the charges were indeed valid! Along with the letter was a copy of the sales receipt at Lowe's showing another persons name IMPRINTED on the reciept and another person's signature!!!

Now they want me to send another dispute in writing stating that that person isn't me ALONG WITH A COPY OF WHAT THEY ALREADY SENT ME!!!

I guess I have been walking around all this time with a false sense of security regarding the protection offered by CC companies. The CC company is MBNA Platinum Plus Visa if you're wondering. If you're carrying that card somebody can STEAL IT, SIGN THEIR OWN NAME TO IT, AND THE COMPANY WILL STILL GIVE YOU A HARD TIME. Stay away.

I sent in the second letter so we'll see what happens. Even if it turns out OK in the end this is one CC company to avoid.

In their defense - they're not doing anything a normal CC company wouldn't do. It had to have been physically swiped and it was signed for, like they sent over to you. They're not making you jump through hoops.

I had a dispute and MBNA resolved it quickly and in my favor... :)

Wow, what a bunch of twats....

Good luck getting that fixed, make sure to raise HELL if they wont take it off.

On another note, i had an unauthorized charge on my Bank of America Visa card one time i called and they took the charge off without question pending investigation. A week later i recieved a letter stating that they found out who did it and i was not held responsible. Painless from BoA, wish MBNA was the same for ya :(

I had my information stolen and someone purchased $800 worth of something. I called up the CC company and they took it off without a question. (there had also been 2 other purchases that hadn't gone through). I use a USAA Credit Card though. They are a good company to work with.

Actually the scary thing is that the account number MATCHED mine, however the imprinted name and signature was not mine. The card was not stolen and according to MBNA it was present when the transaction was mine. Had it been a stolen card the imprinted name would have been mine or my wife's, not the other guy's.

I have a $42000 limit on my MBNA card. I'll never get rid of them. You never know when you'll need $42K.

USAA is an awesome company to deal with regardless of which area you deal with; banking, credit card services, home/auto loans, home/property insurance, mortgage, etc.

I had a similar hard time with a bogus charge using my AmEx Blue card. AmEx sent me paperwork from the company - this company had a name on file that wasn't mine, had the wrong expiration date, and had the wrong security code - all they had was the card number and they STILL let it go through. A-holes. It was even shipped to eastern Europe, and they STILL insisted that it was mine.

Call them on the phone and raise stink. It worked for me.

huh...sorry to hear that! And I'm currently at work about 10 minutes away from where your card was used. But how weird, an even $2000 at a retail store? Gift card, perhaps?

I actually had my MBNA card stolen 3 weeks ago in NYC, and they had no problem refusing a $1000 and a $500 charge...don't know why your situation is different.

I agree, about it being nice to have that, but if they are giving me a hard time over $2000 how would it be for $20,000. Like I said, it will probably end up fine but they pretty much sent me all the proof that was needed to settle the dispute, than asked me to send it back to them and tell them in writing that I am not Eric Jackson, which was basically what I sent them in my first written dispute.

It's because the card was present, and the amount, and the fact that lowes provided an imprinted, signed charge slip.

With internet transactions and stuff it's easier....card not present....no charge slip they could possibly provide...


MBNA is a great bank, if you're on their good side. Very high credit limits, excellent customer service.

that is just terrible, how could the card be verified, and charges went to your account when it's not your name imprinted on the card?

I wouldn't rant too soon. Chances are that they will drop the charges as soon as they receive your written testimony.

I was actually $1974 and some change. Somebody bought a washer and dryer.

I hope you're right but this is the second written dispute on this matter as well as 5 phone calls now. Definately alot of work for something that appears to be so obvious.

My parents cancelled a credit-card just because the limit was so high once. Because my dad was in sales and paid all his travel costs by CC and was reimbursed. At one point his credit limit was more than a year's salary!

When he stopped doing sales they asked to have the limit dropped by about 80%, and the company didn't want to do it so they cancelled.

I can't say I've ever had that problem though ;)
