I set the FSB to 133 for 2.4GHz. It posted just fine, but when it started to load Windows, I got this error:

While initializing device NDIS
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted. CHange the STACKS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file, and then try again.

Anybody how to fix this? Did I just get bitten by the Win98 FE MHz bug? I'm using BIOS 1002, would a newer BIOS help?

YES! THANK YOU! Prime95 is now happily chugging along at 2.4GHz :D  Oh, and this was the first time I've ran the UT2003 demo (couldn't see any point in even trying it on my old PII-350 (yes, I just increased my CPU speed nearly seven times! :Q)) and I have to say that its practically breathtaking, even on this old card. I am having an odd issue with 3DMark 2001 SE though. The Dragothic and Lobby scenes are 2-3x faster on this new machine (even with it bandwidth-choked at DDR200) but the Car Chase scene is actually slower! I think it used to top out at like 31FPS on low detail for about half a second, but now I don't think it gets over 10FPS! Very weird. I haven't tried running it at 2.4GHz yet (figure I'll prime95 for stability first), so maybe that'll help.

Thanks! :) It will be interesting to see how this board compares with my EPoX 4G4A+ :D (thanks Evan!) I'm looking forward to seeing how much I can get out of this video card, once I finish overclocking CPU/RAM I know I can get the video card up to around 190/190 (currently at 143/143). Btw, how do my temps look? This is the first time I've applied thermal paste (for all intents and purposes this is the first computer I've built) and I'm wondering if I put on too much. I realize that the temps will go down as the AS3 sets in, but they still seem a bit high. I'm currently getting 51c while running prime95, according to Asus Probe. Motheboard temperature is still 28C. The HS is very warm to the touch, but not too hot, I can hold my finger on it for about 5 seconds before it gets uncomfortable (kind of like hot water coming out of a faucet).

Thanks Thugs, feels good, tho a bit weird, i come back and people are talking about new mobos and such, i got a bit of catchin up to do!

CrazySaint, yeah, your temps seem a bit high, should be in the low 30's....

Go go go! Heh, are we lost twins or something? I just grabbed a 1.8A SL68Q myself yesterday at a pooter show and plugged it into my P4B-533V. The guy I bought it from had the box out on display and I had to grab it when I read the side label. Week 25 silicon, pack date 9/5. Philippines chip inside the box. Preliminary tests show this chip capable of 2.88 GHz at 1.65v setting, 2.95 GHz at 1.70v setting. Running at 2.7 GHz/default VCore and 400 MHz DDR 2.5-3-3-7 (SPD) default voltage with a 512 MB Samsung "DTL" stick at the moment. I'm quite pleased seeing as my 1st attempt at a P4 (1.8A) o/c didn't even get me to 2.4.

Anyway, this is your SL68Q thread Saint... flash your BIOS to 1005 so you can use the 3:4 mem setting over 133 MHz FSB... also I found 1002 not very o/c stable (erratic POSTing) so get rid of it, let 'er rip, and report back :)

Thanks for the BIOS tip. I've never flashed a BIOS before, are there any special precautions I need to take other than the instructions in the manual? Also, can I flash to a BIOS from a CD-R disk using EZ Flash?

Should I remove the HSF and re-apply AS3?

you probably used too much.
you only need to "color" the cpu (like paint) more then that is a waste and can hurt temps.

(it can also allow the cpu to stick to the HSF upon removal) :Q

I don't see why not, tho a boot floppy would be easier, flashing's pretty easy, just follow the instructions in the manual...

Yeah, I'd try re-applying the AS when you get a chance, you're definitely in no danger tho...:)

sorry Thugs, ya got in there before me...;)

Sure you can, some folks feel safer flashing their BIOS from a pure DOS environment though (me included). To do this, take a blank floppy and format it w/system files ("format a: /s" in a DOS window or in the "Run..." box). Transfer the AFLASH.EXE file from your ASUS CD along with the BIOS image to be flashed; get 1005 here. Unzip the archive and put the image file on the floppy, reboot with the floppy, run AFLASH.EXE, choose option 2 and type in the name of the new BIOS image file.

To be extra safe, set BIOS to default settings before you do this.

Should I remove the HSF and re-apply AS3?

If you like, it can't hurt... that CPU temp does seem high compared to your mainboard temp but then again the mainboard temp sensor is on the opposite corner of the board from the CPU, right in the path of your front air intake. Make sure that fresh, cool air is able to make it up towards the CPU; move obstructions like ribbon cables out of the way as much as possible. How are your fans situated?

Thanks for the tips, guys. I asked if it could be done via CD-R because I don't have a floppy installed (trying to go "floppyless"), but I've got a spare I can stick in there long enough to flash the BIOS if it would be much safer.

I'll re-apply the AS3 when I get a chance, certainly if I haven't done it by the time I put in the 4G4A+, I'll do it then.

Congrats bud! Yeah, I would redo the AS3. It should not be thick.

As for the bios, get a floppy ya bum! ;)

2.4GHz benchies up :) I'm a bit surprised at Q3A only going up 0.2 FPS with a 600MHz increase, I though it was CPU bound?? Surely my video card isn't so old that Q3A is video card bound...

My case is an Antec PP660B and I'm using the two fans that came with it. I've got one rear exhaust fan, and I took the side fan and stuck it in the HDD bay. My HDD barely even gets warm, so I may stick the fan back in the door and see how that works, though it seems that having a fan in the side panel would make taking the panel off a bit of a pain...

you vid card and memory bandwidth is gonna hurt yours scores ~ but the important thing is that you are running these benchmarks and its not crashing ;)

hehe yep :) Once I get the CPU as high as it'll go, I'll kick in the mem ratios, then OC the video card which should help a lot. Prime95 has been chugging at 2.61 for a bit over half an hour, so maybe I'll have a chance at 2.7 on default voltage :D

Ouch 2.7GHz failed Prime95 after 1 minute :( Oh well, 2.61 on default voltage isn't bad :D Its too late to start the voltage game, so I'm gonna let it run prime95 at 2.61/default voltage overnight to ensure stability.

That's it for tonight, boys and girls. Be sure to tune in for tomorrow's exciting conclusion!

wow, can't wait to get my hands on my 1.8a:)!

I'm wondering if I should create a thread like this one for my 2.66. . .;)
