I went online, researched, asked on the forums a bit for some help, bought all the parts, and built my first computer! I took a deep breath, turned it on, and everything worked like a charm! Thanks to everyone who gave help, it was much appreciated.

I have to say, I've switched out a part or two before, but this was fun. I mean, in a newbie kind of way. Especially the motherboard. I sat there the whole time thinking "am i going to fry it because i touch it wrong?" "Was that part supposed to bend that way?" "Maybe I shouldn't pick it up by the blue heatsinks next time" "If i connect this wire in the wrong place, will it catch on fire and blow up?" "What the heck is an HDD LED, and which way does it go, and if its got positive and negative connections, where the heck in the instructions does it tell me which one is which on the wire?" (turns out its only a light, who knew?).

Fraught will peril, but very satisfying in the end, I have to say. Lets hope my vista install goes just as smoothly :) Thanks all!

As for the HDD LED bit, it stands for Hard Drive Disk-Light Emitting Diode, serves as an indicator light as to whether the HD is doing work or not, but the LED portion clues most people in on the light :p

Anyways grats on the new system :D Good luck with the Vista install :)

Haha, yeah, I realized all those things from the front of the case were pretty simple and were not going to blow anything up. :) Turns out I needed to read the case manual instead of the motherboard manual to find out which sides were positive and negative.

I remember my first build. I spent forever putting the heatsink on since I was afraid I was going to break the CPU.

i was scared as hell that i'd bend every single pin because it was kind of hard to figure out which way it fitted in...when i pulled the level and heard the noise (natural noise of the pins going in to the holes), i freaked out haha.

also that id miss one of those gold screws to insulate the mobo from the plate or whatever.

Congrats Tom2000.
Your post brought me back to my first build. Pushing the "Start" button the first time was pretty scary.

Yes Scratch, same for me. It has been almost 9 years for me. I had gotten off of work from my pc job and had all my parts. I stayed up very late putting it together and it was a success. Amd 800mhz T-bird. 128mb ram ($145.00!! back then), voodoo 3 -3000, 40 Gb Seagate HDD, MSI mb, A huge tower w/ psu inc. Added in a netgear 310 nic.. Man those were the days.

Oh forgot.. Win 98

Yeah, the start button is scary. I still had the case open so i could look inside, and I was like: "Is everything spinning? Do I smell any smoke?" Haha, seems kind of silly now.

Are you serious? I was going to close the case and stick it in a corner. Its my HTPC, its supposed to be out of the way. What do I still need to worry about?
