MY FIRST BUILD: amd or intel? ati or nvidia? I have two builds in mind, which one..?

Hello there!

This is my very first post here, because this is my very first build, ever.
So, I´m struggling for a couple of months now to learn how to choose the parts, wich I think is the most difficult and stressing part. I´ve read how to post here, so I give you all the information needed to ask you for help.

I´m in Argentina, so, every component is expensive for me, and I usually have to add newegg prices somewhat 40% to get what I´m going to pay for them. In my case I´ll try to spend less than USD 2000 (what would be something like 1100 for newegg standards).

I want to build a pc that allows me to open several programs at once and work with video editing software. I use it for work most of the time. It will run with Windows 7.
BUT, I would like it to be able to play the latest videogames in high configurations (like mass effect 3 for example), because I like to play too (but I do not consider myself as a serial gamer).

I would like to be able to work with two video cards some day if I buy another one, and I would like to overclock if I need to, someday in the future.

I´ve got a 19" monitor, that I would like to upgrade someday, but I´m conformatble with it, so I´m not planning to do so in the near future.

I want a silent machine. And I won´t buying an extra coller anytime soon (surely if I need to overclock someday).

Now I´ve come with this stuff, please tell me what you think:

ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe (1155)
INTEL Core i7 SB - 2600K @ 3.40 GHz (1155)
ASUS NVIDIA GTX 570 DirectCU II - 1.28 GB DDR5
(OR ZOTAC that´s a little cheaper)

Then I thought about a Plan B, a little cheaper for me:
Asus Corsair V
AMD FX8120
XFX ATI Radeon 6970

I´ve read at this forum several (and I mean several) posts hoping to choose from an AMD or Intel build and to choose the mother.

Now I´m more confused than before 🙂

I´ve read that:

- AMD processors sucks, and the 8 core is no better than the i7-2600k.
- gtx 570 is very similar to radeon 6970 in performance, specially in monitors that doesn´t play in very high res.
- performance of the video card will depend on each game (so this is driving me crazy, as I don´t know what games I´ll play in the future).
- Some charts shows different performance of both video cards for each game, but as the ati one has more Mhz, the nvidia has a better bus, and I´ve read somewhere that the bus is the most important thing. The gtx has 320 bit rate, and the radeon has 256. Are the Mhz more important? What characteristic should I consider to be better?
- the gtx 570 can overclock big time, and almost as a 580. But I´ve read from a poster than the radeon can get to the 580 too...
- I´ve read that some games and applications "like" or "work better" with Nvidia video cards. Is that a myth?

What do you recommend?, I need to work with my pc, and open somethings like a video editor and photoshop, while browse with several windows too... but I eould like to play new games too.

Hope you can guide me here or give me some clues.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was in the same boat as you were about 3 weeks ago..NVIDIA is releasing their Keplar line of video cards fairly soon, so it would be a good idea to wait and see what that release does to the GPU market. ...I found a great post by mfenn and this is a build he posted that would be great for what you are looking for:

2/29/2012 update:
i5 2500K $210 AP
ASRock Z68 Pro3 $105
Patriot DDR3 1600 8GB $38
GTX 560 Ti 448 $260 AR
Crucial M4 128GB $175
Hitachi 7K1000.D 750GB $100
Lite-ON DVD Burner $18
XFX Core 650W $75 AR
HAF 912 $50 AR
Total: $1031 AR

Good Luck to you.....

P.S. On the Anandtech.com you can click BENCH and compare and contrast CPU's, GPU's and whatnot. I found it to be a great tool to help me make a decision when I wasnt sure about something....

Thank you very much!! You´ve been very kind indeed!
I didn´t know that, I think I´ll wait a bit to see that release!
THANKS!!

Hang on, folks...
I want to build a pc that allows me to open several programs at once and work with video editing software.
What video editing software? Adobe Premiere, or something else?

Most video editing software works best with more cores. An i7 could be 20% faster than an i5 at video editing, at the same clock speed.

nVIDIA GPUs can also accelerate Premiere. ATI/AMD GPUs can't.

I want a silent machine. And I won´t buying an extra coller anytime soon (surely if I need to overclock someday).
Well, that's a little contradictory. An aftermarket cooler, like a Hyper 212 Evo, would be much quieter than the stock cooler.

 Need more info. Overclocked GPUs and "silent" PCs definitely don't go together.

Not that I think my build that Seattle posted is bad.

You can have an overclocked GPU in a system that is silent at idle and quiet at load. (That's what I have 😛)

Thanks for your replies!
I´m usually use videostudio, audacity and camtasia at once, for tutorials.
I didn´t know that an aftermarket cooler was that better. Do you mean that when you buy the processor, you should also buy a separate cooler to use with it? That´s ok, I just didn´t knew it. I mean, the i7 cooler looked pretty massive for me.

So from what I understand, I should stick with the intel i7 2600k, and try the ati 6970 (the other one isn´t even on sale in Argentina, and I think it would be quite expensive when it arrives).

I don´t want to overclock, just want to have that option available in my build, just in case, because I´ll try OC before buying another card.

Thanks!! All you replies are very helpful to me!!!

the 6970 doesn't overclock, it may overclock 5-10% but performance gains would probably be like 1-2% max with the overclock. It isn't like the AMD 7xxx series which scales with the overclock.

If you buy a 6970, you will always get stock reference performance.

Hm, let me see if I did get this correctely:
1. The ATI 6970 doesn´t overclock but is is a little better than the NVIDIA 570.
2. The 570 does overclock.

3. The 570 overclocked is better than the 6970. Is that correct?

I´ve read somewhere that the 570 overclocked could get as good as almost a 580, if that´s true, it could be better to buy the nvidia thinking about the future, because I don´t want to buy another card in a while.

Thanks for your insight!!!!!

A 570 over locked will be slower than 7850 over locked and slower than 7870 stock or 7950 stock. A 570 overclock won't have 100% scaling either but will probably become about 5-10% faster than a 6970. But all this requires after market cooling worth at least about $100 which would make it pointless. Rather save money and go for a faster 7870
