Kit lens, Using Aperature-Priority mode. I tried Macro but since im learning i want more control so i can figure out what the adjustments do.

Agreed... but I still think even with a less cluttered background, a larger aperture will help the picture... but in his case, the background is the main problem (as opposed to the F stop).

My problem with taking landscape pics (which I love to do) is that I have to get to those places to shoot them which makes it tough.

You might also want to check a closeup filter, not the best way to get a good macro shot but it's cheaper for starting off.

Combined with a 200 or 300mm zoom it'll get you in closer. Not the greatest picture, but I was just playing around.

Yep, all taken while i spent a semester abroad in the Netherlands... We didnt have very much class so we travelled almost every weekend....

I have the full 4mp images around here somewhere...

I always try to get a real bland background for macros. Cropping the image out really helps, too. You want your eye to be drawn to the subject when the pic is all finished.
Check this photchop of your pic and see what I mean.
In that particular pic, if you slide left just a whiskerbiscuit when you're shooting it, the background gets a lot simpler and makes a nice frame for the flower.
Here's one of mine where I kept a lot of close detail to set off the flower.
This stuff is big fun, ain't it?

This is an example of of what I was blathering about earlier.
It's your pic cropped to soften the background.

Also, Unsharp mask dont sharpen blurry edges, which is what makes it great. Good job on your first attempt.
