My first attempt at copying one of my DVD's...

Had my burner for the past 2 months, thought i ought to try to copy one of my dvd's...

So i used a program to extract the files ... Now, can i go through those files, delete the extra crap, and burn it onto a 4.7gb disc?

You need to use a program, like DVDShrink, or DVD Fab, to remove the extras and/or compress the files so it will fit onto a DVD-R. I personally use DVD Decrypter to initially decrypt the DVD, and then DVD Shrink to rip and shrink/encode DVD's.

why use dvd decrypt? dvd shrink can do all of that for you... hit up www.dvdshrink.info it will automatically resize the files to fit on your 4.7 gig disc 🙂

Well, there you go. I guess you don't even have to use DVD Decrypt. I did see that DVD Decrypt has an option to Open Disc, but I never picked up on it. Thanks for the heads-up! 🙂

Why cant someone release a burner that does the same size as movies?

I'm guessing because DVDs are dual layer, where the current burners are single layer. Some dual layer burners have been announced though and should be here next year. I could be completely wrong about the size thing though, I'm just guessing.

I'm fairly certain there is at least one dual layer burner that works. Should be out in the coming months. I think some people are upset by this (gee, wonder who?) but the manufacturer pretty much said it doesn't care and is proceeding on the project and plans to release it.

"but with DVD+R it appears that a firmware upgrade may be enough to allow dual layer recording on existing DVD+RW Recorders. " holy cow!!!

It can do it. I've done it many times before.

All I use is DVD shrink (the beta version) to rip and Nero to burn.

ya, make sure you are using 3.05 beta or whatever with Deep Analysis 🙂 (to everyone else, not aircooled)

Awesome!!!

I also only use DVDShrink and Nero to burn, I've tried DVDDecrypter and found that Shrink's interface is much easier to navigate and has many more features.

Well, no, but I just did it. So it does work, I guess just not on all discs.
