This month my girlfriend is out the country with her family for 30 days, the entire month of July. While it was difficult at first to accept it and just 'get over it' you spend enough time with someone (the last 3 years) not being apart for any length greater than 10 days and it's difficult to deal with. Enough about that though and on to the point of my post.

About 3 months ago, I had finally reached a breaking point with my weight. I am 6'4" and at the time I had topped out at 328#. While that makes me sound like a total fatass, I wasn't to the point where I'd be out of breath after running up a flight of stairs, but I was definitely dissatisfied with my physical appearance.

At that time the only thing I did was cut any sodas/high calorie beverages to 1 a day, 2 at most on some days. Ever stop to think, that if you eat out at a restaurant and have 5 cokes that's 750 calories right there? Well on to the next point.

After about 2 months I'd managed to lose about 15 lbs, without changing anything but less sodas.

After my girlfriend was gone 9 days, I decided to make a change in my life. Currently I'm only consuming about 1200 calories a day. You really do NOT realize how difficult that is until you honestly try it, counting EVERY thing you take in. Ever eaten 3 peppermints after dinner from a restaurant? That's *60* calories right there! Yeah, *60*! I couldn't believe that when I found out.

Now on to the good news. It's been 14 days since I started the diet, I was around 312# when I started, and as of this morning I was between 292-294#. In only 14 days I've lost nearly 20 lbs. Now on to why this works:

To maintain your current weight, multiply your body weight by 12. This is how many calories you should consume in order to MAINTAIN your current weight. For example:

A 200 lb. man:

200 x 12 = 2400

If this man sits around idling most of the day (most office jobs) he should consume no more than 2400 calories in order to maintain his current weight.

At nearly 300# I can consume as much as 3600 calories and not gain anything, however, I estimate my caloric intake BEFORE going on this diet, between 3000-5000 calories on any given day. That sounds like a lot but I had a large appetite, it was merely what I was used to.

Also, I've been swimming approximately 1 hour per day, which BURNS 1200 calories at my weight, so I'm basically consuming NOTHING on a daily basis, losing 3600 calories (approximately 1 lb per day) and I attribute the additional weight loss to other various activities I've kept myself busy with.

In conclusion, just like there are no 'get rich quick' schemes, there are no real 'diets'. The only way to change what you look like physically (losing weight) is to change your habits, become more active, and eat less.

If you DO decide you would also like to lose weight, make sure you take a multivitamin to make up for any nutrition loss you might incur, as well as some sort of regular exercise program so as not to lose vital muscle structure.

And before anyone asks, there will be no before and after PICS!! :D

Thank you very much for reading, I appreciate any constructive criticism. Any negative criticism I'd appreciate be kept amongst yourselves :)

Excellent... I'm doing basically the same thing and have lost about 10 pounds.. i want to closely monitor and try to cut cut down my caloric intake but haven't found an easy way to fo that.

any suggestions? What are you using to determine the calories of food and what are you using to monitor it?

Where do you want be at?

Well, I was going to weight lift at first, instead of swimming, but unfortunately all that did was 'add' pounds so I switched to swimming because I can build muscle SLOWLY, tone (which is more what I want to do anyway) and burn calories. Weight lifting believe it or not, does not burn that many calories.

At 6'4", I want to get down to 225# and then start lifting weights. After 6 weeks of that I expect to be around 240#, hopefully somewhat solid, and then continue on a regular regiment of weight lifting, swimming, and hopefully throw some running into the mix. I'm not a small framed person, so at 240# I expect to be VERY physically fit, and hopefully have a waistline somewhere between 38-40. I'm currently wearing a 48 inch dress slack and 46 inch jeans.

I'm 6 foot and would like to be at 210. I have zero will power though so even 10-15 pounds will be brutal for me. When I was dating my wife though I went to her aerobics class she taught. I was down to 195 with 12% body fat in 2 months. I was crazy in love then, now im just in love. No need to be crazy, she married me. ;)

any suggestions? What are you using to determine the calories of food and what are you using to monitor it?

This was very difficult for me because I work about 55 hours a week, and consequently I eat out a lot. I've found a handful of restaurants (even fast food restaurants) where I can have <600 calories per meal. Since I only eat 2 meals a day (I've never really eaten breakfast but if you do I suggest fresh fruit in the morning, with water).

Here are some suggestions if you eat out:

Wendy's (Chargrilled chicken sandwich, and side salad with lo-cal dressing) approx. 450 calories
Chik-Fil-A (Same as above)
Black eyed pea (They have a grilled chicken breast with rice, and 2 veggies, stick to sugar snap beans or corn) approx. 600 calories
Chili's (Guiltless chicken platter) Pretty much same as above, and only 9 grams of fat too
Subway (There are about 10 choices here, pair a 6" sub up with baked chips) approx. 450-500 calories

I also drink approximately (1) gallon of water per day. While it's not necessary to drink this much (64 oz. should be sufficient) I find it helpful in staying active and keeping cool.

If you eat at home or do a lot of cooking there are so many suggestions:

Eat fresh fruit as a snack, most are <100 calories
Drink iced tea with sween n' low or equal for a 0 calorie beverage
Wal-Mart has 96% fat free beef, 1 lb. of this is only 520 calories. Add it to tacos, make hamburgers, or do whatever you like.
Healthy choice meals are generally 250-350 calories, just check the labels

If you need additional suggestions, feel free to ask.

Try to avoid empty calories such as hard candy and sodas.

Congrats on the weight loss. It takes a lot of discipline over a long period of time to lose that much weight.

Why eat so little?

Good for you! It's always heartening to see someone take action and put so much effort into self-improvement.

Currently I'm biking 1-2 hours/day, 3 days a week (I'd do more if I had time). That burns about 600-1000 calories per go.
I stopped drinking carbonated beverages entirely, and eliminated fast food from my diet.
Unfortunately it seems so far I've just gained mass in my thighs and butt from cycling.. my jeans are getting TIGHT in that area but are pertty much the same on the waist (where I gain my pounds).

good luck and keep it up. I did it pretty well for being in college at the time.. surrounded by roommates who ate out a lot. I've since slumped in my exercising and whatnot.. and it's seemingly harder to eat better at home for some reason.

And yeah, i did two weeks of "calorie counting" and realized my soda intake was WAY too high.. one of those 20oz bottles is 250-300 cal's right there... switched to diet for a while and then nothing for a while.. but it's creeping it's way back. Getting difficult now since i'm working a late night shift for the summer... mcdonalds is open 24hrs.. so tempting since i always come out hungry :(

hmm for a starving college student like me it must be real bad.

i'm like 170.

i run about 10-12 miles a week, and play ball, and walk everywhere. but i'm too cheap and too lazy to eat a lot of food so i end up eating maybe 1 or 2 meals a day. somehow i'm still alive.

I recommend exercising more, not eating less. Just adjust somethings in diet and work out more.
Starving yourself is not a sustainable way to lose weight.
I was 6' 280 lbs 2 months ago. Now I am still 6' and 245 lbs, and I got a lot more muscle.
I bike to work 16 miles a day. go on the precor for 45 mins (1000 calories right there), and I lift weights.
Total I burn about 5000 calories/day. I eat about 2500 calories, so I lose about half pound a day.
I am like a diesel going uphill on my bike now. I can go in higher gear and faster than my far more skinny friends.
It's all about the torque.
My aim is to get to 200 lbs, then I will tone down the exercise a little to sustain the weight, and concentrate more on weight lifting and building muscle.

Get a job at mcdonalds. That got rid of my desire to eat fast food REAL fast ;):)

I haven't eaten fast food since I started working at McDonalds (start of summer), and have been a year off soda. I'm not really overweight (5'10 170lbs), so I don't know if not drinking soda has made me lose weight, but I know it has made me feel a lot better.

Keep up the good work :)

Um... what about metabolism? Shouldn't you somehow need to factor that in to your calorie equation?

I'm about 127lbs. (15 years old) and I eat junk food and other stuff all day long, and I don't gain ANY pounds at all (Well maybe 1-2 in a month lol).

Please dont take this the wrong way but loosing 1 pound a day is very unhealthy. You want to loose about two or 3 a week.

Most of it's probably water weight... so the true weight loss is considerably less. However, at such a large weight, water weight is probably a large amount of the overall mass.

Good for you! A couple points of advice. DO weight lift. It will help you to maintain your lean body mass (the part of you that is not fat!) as you diet. You are on a very low calorie diet (too low, I think) and might consider losing weight a little more slowly. Weightlifting DOES burn calories if you keep moving and do not rest to much between sets (also assuming you are really lifting appropriate weights and not just doing tons of lifts with light weights). Otherwise, you will lose a large % of muscle along with your fat and end upin even more trouble. You are not going to "bulk up" or gain much weight while lifting while consumingso few calories, so don't worry about that at all. Try to do both weights and swimming. If you can only do one, weights will likely help you become lean faster (seriously!)

Big, no, HUGE, mistake. 6'4" / 314lbs. and you are consuming only 1200 calories a day?!? I'm 6'2" 185lbs. and I consume 2,500 calories daily. Does something look wrong here? :D :)

You are making the classic dieters' mistake. By cutting your calories that low, your body is most certainly in starvation mode. You are losing weight -- yes, indeed -- but that weight is not the fat you want to lose! You're losing precious lean muscle tissue and water, not fat.

You should be consuming no less than 2,500 calories daily. And I mean no less. Try increasing your protein and fat (watch the saturated fat, though :D) and cut out as much as possible sugars (carbohydrates). Make sure the ones you are eating are "clean" -- whole wheat bread, veggies, fruits (some), et al.

Pabster hit the nail right on the head. Common misperception is that if you eat less you will lose weight faster. Well, the first thing to go is muscle. The body saves the fat for last because of the starvation mechanism that humans have evolved.

If you would like to drop the weight in a healthy way, then cut 500 calories from the total maintenance amount, which is about 3100 calories for you. But they HAVE to be clean calories. This is a must. I work 84 (yes 84 that 7 x 12) hours a week, and still don?t eat fast food. I bring a bucket load of food to work, but I haven?t slipped from my diet once in the 2 months I've been working these hours (apart from the occasional cheat mean to maintain my sanity. But it was planned). Forget eating fast food.

Also, some sort of resistance training is a must. Simply speaking, lean muscle boost metabolism, which will help you burn fat. At my worst, i was 250 lbs with a bit of muscle. Now I?m about 200 lbs, solid muscle. It may look like I?ve only lost ~50 lbs, but much more fat was lost while heavier muscle was gained. So consider joining a gym or something to aide with this. You've got the right idea with swimming. Keep up the good work.

I applaud your efforts to get into better shape so that you look and feel better. But I feel that if you are going to do it, you should do it properly so that the weight doesn?t come back at a later date.

If you have any questions or problems, feel free to PM.

That's what I said too. Just exercise more. You will not be able to sustain a diet where you eat 1200 calories. You wanna get your metabolism up, and cut down on intake a little bit.

Dieting is an exercise in frustration when you have to eat Indian food at home almost every day. I wish I could eat subway everyday
