My fiance did not know how a 4 way stop works

My fiance is a very smart and level headed woman. She has much better reasoning skills than the majority of women I've met (one of the main reasons I'm marrying her). She went to a harder school and did better at it then I, although my laziness is mostly to blame there. She definately has me on a lot of subjects...as I do to her. But coming from a very small town...she sometimes has funny ideas.

A few months ago, driving up to a four way stop I said something about that "fvcker stealing my turn". She asked what I meant, and I said "I got there first, so I get to go first"
"Thats not how it works"
"Yeah, it is. "
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. I've driven through about 1 million 4 way stops. You've been driving for like 3 years and you don't know how 4 way stops work...How do you think they work?"
"The person on the main road goes first."
"What main road? Its a 4 way stop...there is no main road!"
"Are you sure thats how it works?"

I finally got her to believe me...she seriously thought I was making it up.

Not that I haven't had my stupid ideas....it was still funny though.
 
But, if 2 people are at the stop at the exact same time, then who goes first?

Yep. Now if 4 people arrive at the same time, you've got a problem.
 
I hate 4 way stops to this day. I avoid them when possible. When I can't avoid them, I just wait until people start honking at me to go.
 
Not surprising considering how easy it is to get a license. A chimpanzee can answer 15 out of 20 questions correctly and drive around a city block.

You are correct... except... can lead to some deadlocks...If 4 people arrive at the same time at a 4-way stop sign - everyone waits for the person to "their" right 🙂 and no one goes.

Who goes first at a 4-way stop?

If you get to the intersection before any other cars, you have the right of way. If two or three cars arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the farthest right has the right of way.

What about 4 directions of cars waiting at a 4-way stop?

The alternating directions take turns. In other words, north and south go, then west and east. Those turning left yeild to the car coming the opposite direction, just like with a green light.

If it's someone else's turn and they won't go?

If the person who has the right of way is sitting there looking at you and not moving, then I would proceed CAREFULLY through the intersection. No sense backing up traffic because somebody else doesn't know the rules.

What if the intersection is NE/SE NW/SW?
 
I hate 4-way stops. It's more like the 'race of death', first in wins. I don't understand why it's not done like back home:

The car coming from the right has 'right of way', aka you yield for anyone coming from the right.
Easy, no misunderstanding and no race to get there first.

I'm constantly amazed how many drivers in Atlanta treat an interesection where the main road lights are flashing yellow and the small road lights are flashing red like a freaking 4-way stop.

LOL - Really? I used to get nervous about them and just be the less aggressive driver. Now, if I notice that I might arrive at ~ the same time as a nother vehicle, I just slow down, roll up to the stop sign, and exaggerate my stop a bit, to indicate that they got there "first" and let them go. Seems to work well enough.
 
4-way stops are fun. i sometimes like to sit there and wait for the other car to go, then i hit the gas and break immediately... causing them to stop. i do this 2 or 3 times until i've had my share of amusement then i let them go.
