My feeble little brain is going to explode, what to buy?

Cheers everyone. I'm building a new computer very soon (ie ordering the parts within the next couple of days). 900MHz TBird is currently what I'm looking at, but the trouble comes in with what mobo to get for the blasted thing. I've read some not-so-good things about the Abit KT7Raid, and I've also read some fantastic things (I'm speaking reviews and forums). There's a good half-dozen or so boards to choose from but I'd like to be able to OC the TBird some (yeah won't be much I know, but every little bit helps😀).

I'd appreciate any suggestion and reasons for/against. Thanks.

What do you think of all the other discussions on Athlon/Duron motherboards?

Cripes, that's a psycho looking smilie, lol.

Hmm yes I'm seeing a lot of talk about the MSI. For some reason I thought it was bad for overclocking?

Chansen, who are you asking? I just recently signed up here (read today) but I knew both boards have been highly reccomended, well until I started reading messages about them and then I saw a number of complaints about the Abit. Naturally causing some concern, I don't want to pay all that money for a problem board.

MSI makes quality boards. The stuff you heard about the MSI boards not OCing well is probably from the MSI K7T Pro, not to be confused with the Pro2. The Pro2 allows for OCing while the Pro does not. Get the Pro2. I would if I were building a system right now.

Heh, after all this I can't find the damn thing in stock, lol! Just my luck. 🙂

Don't suppose you could suggest a backup if I can't get this board within the next couple weeks or so (somewhat of a timelimit on this 🙁).

jimmygates,

About the MSI K7T Pro, technically, it does permit overclocking, but its very limited in terms of OC features. Unlike the Pro2 and Pro2a (and other popular boards such as the A7V and such), the Pro does not offer multiplier adjustments. Since overclocking the socket A chips is done mostly through the multiplier, this really limits what you can do. The Pro does allow for FSB adjustments, but no one has really been able to push the FSB that far on this chipset.
