Hands down, I can't think of any band I like more then them.

R.I.P. Layne Staley

Imagine what could've happened if Layne was able to kick his habit. Now I have to wait and wait and wait to see if the remaining band members are ever going to put out an album. (Jerry C. has only been doing west coast shows as of late, but I have both his albums)

Do you guys have a band that affects you the way AIC does for me?

I always liked Soundgarden a lot more.

Metallica myself...
up to Black anyway.. then down the tubes...
almost wish they had broke up at same time Soundgarden did when they woulda been remebered without the trash last 3 albums

Yeah, I used to *love" Metallica. Justice was my favorite album. Very heavy and rhythmic. But I also liked their first. Seek and Destroy, Four Horsemen, and Am I Evil still kick ass. But yeah, with Black, it was all downhill. Too bad.

Agreed, but I have to give Load a bit of credit. They did a pretty good job on that album. The more recent stuff, especially St. Anger.....uggggh!!

The S&M tour was quite an experience, granted, they did play mostly older stuff through that 2-disc set.

Phish.

Please don't start with the dirty, pot smoking hippie crap either. I bought my first album in 92 and no I don't do drugs. I have seen them 20 + times live. Any of the 4 of them could have lead their own band. Along with Keller Williams, Niel Pert, John Fuschante(sp?) and Bela Fleck, they are the greatest musicians of all time.

Interesting. What song could I "get" to get a feel for their music. And did they do that version of "Gin and Juice" or not?

I like to talk music, but meh, not a lot of people listen to the music I like. Alice of Chains is dece, but they've lost appeal.

Anyway, my favorite band: ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead.

there is no album I enjoy listening to more than Source Tags and Codes.

Metal
1. Led Zeppelin
2. Black Sabbath
3. AC/DC
4. ZZ Top

Mellower but good:
1. Tom Petty
2. Lynnerd Skynnerd
3. Allman Brothers
4. Eagles

I am an old fart and don't know much about newer music, except for the most part, it sucks.

As for Alice in Chains, they rock, na-naaa-na-naa-naaaa-naaa-na-naa-na-na. I'mmmmmmmm the man in the box duhn duh duh -- THAT SONG ROCKS.

I would say their "Feel" is best expressed in Taste off of Billy Breathes or Fee from the first disc of Junta. And no theat is not them on the "Gin and Juice". IMHO it sounds more like Blues Travler

Yeah, Load was good and S&M also, Reload and St. Anger were kind of boring but I´m still a real fan.

By the look of your list, you should definitely check out some of the later stuff by AIC, their major influence came from Black Sabbath. As far as older rock goes, Tom Petty definitely takes the cake for me:

Won't Back Down
Refugee
Wildflowers
Free Fallin (obligatory)
aaaah, there's too many to name. Great band (Tom w/ the Heartbreakers)!!!

Dirty shame, but at least Velvet Revolver is getting their time in the spotlight (by no means equivilates to the sounds of GnR, but descent nonetheless, Slash is the man)

Did you get the box set yet? I'm looking into it, but I wanna know how it turned out.

I downloaded it to see if it was any good. But it seems to be that it's mostly rare tracks, live performances, and demos. The quality is poor on most, some even sould like they are in mono. Most sounded like bootlegs versions of the songs off of Bleach. I'm a Nirvana fan, but I deleted it and decided not to buy it. If you already have all their albums, I'd say it's not worth buying the box set, IMO.

Yeah, I heard some of the tracks were really poor quality, I would get it just to see all of the home video/doc footage they got of Nirvana in their early days. If I found out it was pretty elaborate, I might buy it.

they were ok. probably the weakest of those 1st wave grunge bands (except maybe for STP), but i don't think there's any denying that they were the most influential. practically every popular rock record that came out for a few years there was just re-hashed AIC. in contrast, nirvana, who everyone says was influential, had practically zero influence on modern music aside from being the band that broke the alternative format into the mainstream.

i still remember the day i bought 'jar of flies' cassette. i bought it at a target in clairemont mesa. i got home, popped it in my walkman, and was blown away. 'no excuses', 'i stay away', 'rotten apple', etc., i couldnt believe my ears. i still thoroughly enjoy that album to this very day, incredible stuff.

as for me and my personal favorite band? its funny, for all the different types of music i listen to, and the musical stages ive gone through life, and touting a big predilection towards hip-hop and such, my favorite band is rage against the machine. ive been a huge listener and ever since the self-titled album, and i still listen to their albums on a very constant basis. in fact, when i got my mp3 player, the very first albums i threw on it were rage albums. even though they are no longer together, they left me enough quality material that will fill my ears for years upon years.

You say they were the weakest, yet the most influencial? (Contradicting yourself, no?)

I have a fairly biased opinion on the grunge seen, but you can't deny that Jerry Cantrell is one of the best guitarists still alive.

I'm still planning to getting the boxset even though the song quality is poor. I would also get it mainly for the videos.
