He's on the phone with his wife right now. :)

I'm down for the weekend doing the hamfest with him, and on the way in I was mentioning today that Vonage slashed the price of their in-store kits and told him how their plans went, and we just happened to be driving by a Circuit City and he said "Let's do it". He was definitely thrilled with unlimited calling at $29.99 with nearly none of the taxes thrown on the regular phone bills.

Just actived his box about 30 minutes ago, and it's off and running. Now all he needs to do is unplug Verizon from the network interface outside and tell them to shove off.

Sorry about the no-referrals on this one, but the in-store ones don't seem to let you.

Chalk up another one on Vonage...

A router type thing. Plugs into your network and your phone plugs into that.

The only drawback I see to is that you just need to make sure your BB ISP is realiable. If your BB goes down, then your phone is down as well ... *I think* =)

$30 activation equipment is free. I've had mine for about 8 months and love it.

ACTUALLY - that is only if you order directly through Vonage. Like I said, we purchased the kit from Circuit City, which is currently running $89.99 - $50MIR = $39.99, and it's $0 activation with the kit. Supposedly the CC folks said that you get 2 free months as well with the kit.

So far it's working well. I plugged it into my dad's network a little early, so I thought there was some cabling problem, I unhooked everything then hooked it all back up and it booted in a little under 30 seconds - placed a call to the house landline and everything worked, without even forwarding any ports on the router.

Already logged about 3 hours of what would be long distance calls this evening.

Unfortunately that won't last long.

They will be forced to start tacking on all kinds of "Extra" fees such as the bogus Universal Service Charge, E-911, Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee, etc etc. It will be right up there to $50 in a heartbeat.

hmm, I've never heard of it before.

If I were to do it I'd have to do the unlimited local and unlimited long plan as their "regional" defintion sucks.

I live in southern indiana. area code 812. I like about 5 minutes away from louisville, ky, area code 502. If I were to get a 812 number, if I called louisville, it would be long distance, if I called my fiance's 502 number it would be long distance for pete's sake. that's stupid.

I've been looking into Vonage for a while. Just recently got the wife onboard, so we may take the plunge soon. I would love to say goodbye to Sprint completely, I hate them....

Not only is it no longer long distance but you can have any number you want. You can have a 502 number for the hell of it.

Well, noone can for sure say what the FCC is going to do in the future, but I believe the house has said they want hands kept off VOIP services. I know for a fact that Vonage is immune to the USC fee until the rule gets rewritten, as it's for traditional telco service only.

Got it and love it myself. The bastards, Verizon, were bleeding me for over 30 a month for just local service with no long distance.

My buddy told me they would be able to forward the calls to a secondary phone (cellphone).
He uses phonom, but I'm reading about them and it's not looking good.

So if I have Verizon DSL can I still cancel my regular phone service and use vonage with the DSL?

Or will Verizon try to make me stay on their normal phone service too?

Except for certain business plans, yes. Even then you technically have a phone line, you just can't make any calls on it.

For those of you that have this service....did you cancel your entire local phone service and use this Vonage for your local AND long distance calls? I am currently paying for local and unlimited long distance and pay about $80 a month and it looks like you guys are saying I can only pay $29.99 a month...true or false?

true ... depending on who you talk to, quality can be good or bad. It really depends on your internet connection.

i am tempted to jump on the bandwagon, but I'm not liking the fact that my phone system wil be down in the event of my internet connection or electricity being down.
