i'm currently using a sony trinitron 17" CRT. everytime i use it, after about 1 hour, my eyes get very tired. i have to squint my eyes to keep them moist. i even have my brightness and contrast turned down so it looks very dark now. is it time to shell out $250 for a LCD?

CRTs only give me eye trouble if they're running at 60 Hz. Check your refresh rate. 76 or above is gravy.

i'm not too sure what the maximum refresh rate of this monitor is. the higher the refresh rate, the less strain on your eyes, correct?

it's currently running at 75Hz.

EDIT: i don't see any flickering at 75Hz (current rate). i'm not sure if it's the refresh rates that's causing eye problems.

I run my refresh rate at minimum of 75 Hz up to 85 Hz, depending on my video card. If you run your CRT at a lower rate, you are assured of getting eyestrain.

this is not right. i have my contrast and brightness turned so low that it looks like there's a black filter screen on it. either there's something wrong with my eyes, or my monitor is producing massive radiation towards my eyes.

I had similiar problems with my CRT and eventually all CRTs. They just made my eyes sore and gave me tired eyes like you are experiencing. I just stopped using them and bought an LCD, now I can look at screens for hours and not get sore or tired eyes.

Trust me, buying an LCD is a good investment for your eyes, you only get one pair so you may as well look after them!

Yup, I agree. That is one of the reasons why I switched. My eyes are more important than my monitor. But make sure your eyes feel more comfortable using an LCD, because it isn't the case with some people. Eliminating the flickering did it for my eyes though. You just gotta be careful with the brightness of LCDs.

I pump up the res to 100, but I did read somewhere that someone had to use it below 60 to aviod eye strain.

Sony Trinitrons are beautiful tubes. you can run that puppy at 1024x768 @ 100hz with no problems. I did so for 5 years on mine.

From 17" to 19" CRT, I thought the strain will be less since the newer 19" has a higher resolution. But it made it worse having to stare constantly at a 19". Actually, I even have a screen filter to lighten the contrast. So when the eye sore and strain becomes unbearable I bought a 19" LCD and eversince I have never experience any eye strain or sore. It's worth every penny you will spend on an LCD.

I didn't get that from CRTs at the time... but after years of using LCD, going back to CRT now tires my eyes too. Go LCD. $250 is nothing when it comes to comfrot and your eyes.

Be careful, though. Not all LCDs are created equal. I purchased a Dell 2405FPW last fall (generally considered the ferrari of LCDs), and it was beautiful. Perfect for gaming. Really amazing monitor...

But the backlight was sooo bright, that even at "0 brightness", I could barely stand to read text on it for 30 minutes. My eyes felt like they were being burned out. I had to have every ambient light on in the room to dull the shock. Ended up selling it due to dissapointment with that.

On the other hand, I can stare at my laptop LCD for days at a time and never get eyestrain. ;-)

Yeah, get a LCD. I might go that way but my eyes only give up at bed time. I'm running
a Mit 2060u NF 22"CRT at 100Hz and it's rock solid. The only down side is wattage used and size.

i'm thinking of getting the dell 1907fp, but doesn't it use an inferior panel compared to the 1905fp?

Plz read the stickied LCD Buyers Guide over in the Video Forum.

If I were in the market for a LCD display it would get my attention. ;)
