Who the f0ck guys in to an electronics store (well MORE SO the people from HERE) looking for advice?!

You know what you want to buy but you want to 'know' a few specifics of the products. Say what cables does it actually have and a few other little tid bits that you may noth ave found out by researching.

a cunning good sales person in the AVTA department makes around 2000 on a above avg a week, give or take. around holidays like thxgiving and xmas they make about 800+ more than the above avg a week.

i'm not so sure how much the less experienced makes, they dont like to show me their paychecks....so there's a clue right there. but i dont blame them for making less, since the managers dont help them out with customers as much as they do with the long termed sales veterans. but i'd say you have a good chance to climb the ladder if you work in either the avta or comp sales.

Also, thats pretty damn good, 2K a week is cusping into 6 figures yearly pay, more than entry level engineers. What kind of hours do you have to do to make that much?

substitute accessories with appliances.

long hours, i'd assume at least 50 hours, and much longer on holidays. and 2k a week is like i said on above avg week, and when it's closing in to the holidays, and they much more ON the holidays, but on slow seasons there's not much to expect, perhaps 1200 if they're lucky.

if you ask me, all the money is in components. you HAVE to get a quote to get hd's and cpu's out of the monkey cage up front. you get one CPU and then usually they'll grab all your other stuff and add it to your quote, telling you "it'll be easier to ring you up in the front."

although in avt, you are more likely to sell the PG then you ever will in components, which is where the real commission dollars are.

components sales, i'd see them have 2000 in commission a week. i didn't always see the AVT paychecks but the good ones could do that too.

mangers make commission too. man i remember when they first switched to commission, i went to visit some of the people i worked with. one was promoted to sup in front checkout and she kinda wanted to go back to cashiering because she made more.

yeah the PG is where the money really is. some sales people can sell up to 400 dollars of PG, and they receive about 25% of it (if i recall right, but it's around there). and it was just heavenly for us cashiers to see that on top of a big screen HDTV, dvd, etc. etc., they also bought the PG.

however, regardless of the PG, avta's merchandises have a higher margin than the components, and sales ppl makes commission depending on the margin and not as much as the price they tend to sell. sometimes they rather sell something really cheap but makes more commission than selling something that's on sale.

the top sales ppl were always from either avta or laptop sales ppl where i worked. or maybe i'm mixing up with how much they sold. but all i know is that most of the ppl in components were mostly young, and didnt seem to sell that much.

 
the last time i went to fry's I ended up getting a frat dood as a sales rep....i wanted to buy a mobo/cpu combo, asking if he had the one in the ad. Soemhow we got onto the topic of bars and womens, he ended up ditching the counter and following me up an isle for no other reason than just to brag about his frat. It was great...totoal moron otherwise cause when i asked for a P4 3Ghz he was like "The athlon combo?"
 
I worked at frys for 8 months and my aunt is a dep manager at a different frys. I worked as a Service Tech. Yeah, I got to wear a lab coat and everything. Even the techs are paid on commision, though there was always so much work we never had to "push" anything on anyone. I got reprimanded a lot for telling people to buy new or build rather than repair their 386.

The biggest problem was the total lack of training. Some of the techs had been there for years and couldn't diagnose a pc. Usually fixing your computer went something like this for them: set it up, turn it on, tinker around a little, replace a few parts at random, and then either ask another tech or return it as "fixed." I saw some machines that techs would "work" on for a week or more. Hell, I had to show all the other techs how to network 2 computers with a crossover cable to do data transfers. The only way they knew how to do it was cloning a hard drive with one of those hdd duplicators.

Don't bother taking a laptop or monitor there for repair unless it's under warranty, except under rare circumstances they just get shipped out for weeks. However, if you do have something under manuf. warranty and the manuf. wants you to ship it to them at cost, frys will ship it for you for free (if you can prove its under warranty and you bought it there.) At least we did with most electronics.

FYI: If you knock over a halogen lamp onto your laptop and it burns a hole straight through the LCD do not bother taking it back to Fry's and acting like there's nothing wrong with it. Especially if the laptop was one loaned to you by frys weeks ago because they sent your laptop out for repair.

Everything in the first post is right on the money. He left out is that the people at the return counter are paid commision on how little they return. If you want to get through a return hassle free ask for store credit or exchange. And the door guys? 10% of the time they're "trained" loss-prevention. The other 90% of the time it's just the newest cashier that got told to help out.

When I went in to quit they gave me the fired for cause sheet to fill out (probably hoping I wouldn't notice.) That pissed me off a lot.

mmm, not really, i mean yeah it was great working there while it lasted because of certain other people i worked with, which got fired as well, but i saw myself taking a bunch of non credit college courses just to be able to work there 40+ hours which they demanded me to.

after getting fired, i worked at a gaming company finding bugs, making more an hour with half the supervision and 1/8 of the work.

as far as i'm concerned, they did me a big favor

and let me guess, you must be one of the 35 year old sup working at a fry's, making minimum wage and less commission than a cashier? =]

Nah...I'm a 35 year old that felt the same way about employers after I got fired from a couple of jobs some years back 🙂

I like Fry's because I go in knowing what I want about 95% of the time. Plus they have lower prices than stores like Circuit City and Best Buy.
