My experience with Pioneer DVD-RW's

About a year and a half ago I picked up a Pioneer A05 from a supplier of the store I used to work at. Ran flawlessly for about 5 months then started to die on me. 1/2 of all my burns were failing with many different kinds of blanks and different software so I RMA's it and got enough credit to pick up a brand new 107.

It's about 8 months that I have the 107 and it's starting to have similiar problems. DVD is rattling and I can't seem to burn anything. I'll have to RMA this one as well.

Has anyone else had any reliability problems with Pioneer's ? or did I just happen to get 2 lemons ?

Like most ppl I here I rely on reviews to guide my hardware purchasing decisions but a review really can't measure the reliability of drives over a long period of time. Everyone remember the IBM HDD's that everyone was raving about ? I'm sure all the ppl that bought those wish they had never read any reviews 🙂

I'm not comparing the Pioneers to the IBM drives and I really don't know how any review , unless it's a year late could rate long term reliability , and I can't blame any hardware review but I can't help shake the feeling that if in ignorance, I bought some cheap BENQ burner or LG , I might not be having the problems that I'm having today.

I would hazard a guess that there are not many
of your model Pioneers out there...hence no comments....
(can you blame the blanks disks ??)

I got the 108 but its only a few months old and it works fine.

I have had my Pioneer 107 for about 8 months, and it is solid as can be. I have used this drive HEAVILY. Various media and various players, the 107 has been excellent.

I think there are more 107's around then you are assuming, bendixG15.

ive have used several different pioneer dvd-rw drives for a couple years with no problems (and they get used a lot) with no problems at all.

I have an A05/105 along with 2 other friends, they work well. Sounds like your just unlucky with these pioneers unfortunately.

Rattling? Sounds like one of the bearings is going. I'm having the same problem with a several-year-old Afreey 56X CD reader, unfortunately. It was one of my best (and fastest) readers, bar none, but then one day it made some noise, and it's been flaky ever since. I suspect some dust or possibly even cat hair got into the bearings somehow. I finally pulled it just last night after replacing it with a Benq 52X burner (also a good reader), so I can take apart the Afreey and look into it.

At least they've had problems within the year warranty. I guess I can't complain too much if I keep getting defective burners replaced by newer , faster models 🙂
