92 Honda Civic, ~150K miles. Was my car for most of its life, so I know it *was* well maintained, no major accidents etc. New CV joints and struts last year, good tires. Interior is very good, exterior a little faded and chipped, but good. No rust.

Anyway, she somehow ran it dry and ignored the idiot lights/guages and smoked the engine. I'm thinking of buying it cheap and getting a new engine dropped in. It'd be nice to get about 35 mpg on occasion instead of the 15 I get with the land cruiser.

What are the options? Any idea what it would cost?

just looked it up on KBB - in good condition the car is worth about $2500

92-95 Civic = D15 series engine.

I think he wants to buy it from her and fix it for himself, which if he can stay under $1700 wouldn't be a bad deal. But damn I can't imagine getting a decent used Honda engine too easily.

Hell no - I'm not fixing it for her! I'm talking about buying it and fixing it for myself. May not even be an option - she may have sold it as salvage already.
 
Unless you do the junkyard route, replacing the engine with a decent rebuilt will still run you more than the $2500 that the car is worth, (parts & labor) Junkyard, MAYBE $800-$1500, depending on how much you get it for, and how much you get charged in R&R costs.
 
I see some D15 engines on ebay - apparently imported from Japan. buy-it-now price of about $500 + probably $150 shipping. Any WAGs on cost on actual labor?
 
Throw a B18B in there. No need for VTEC. Engine/tranny combinatinos are cheap. You may need some custom motor mounts, but it'd be worth it! Heck, look into a B20z! That is what I would do, undoubtedly.
 
I know you are tempted but unless you know a reputable tech that's cheap, forget it, the combination of mileage and the cost of a replacement engine, even if a cheap junkyard engine was found does not make financial sense.
(unless of course you get the car for 100 bucks)

My mechanic quoted me $500-$700 to install a motor- I was looking at buying one from Japan, as you said. This was for a Mazda, so probably similar pricing?
 
I did that to a 1980 Honda Civic. The thing had a pinhole leak in the radiator which suddenly turned into a large leak while I was driving on the DC Beltway. Oddly enough the guage did not show the car overheating, the temperature actually started dropping which is what caught my attention. When I noticed that and looked in the rearview to move right to the shoulder I saw the white smoke pouring out of the back of the car and knew it was done for.
 
just get a new car, really not worth it to change the motor and have someone else do it. the cost that youll run into will almost outpace a newer car choice

I'm not concerned about my ex - the car used to be mine and I know that the rest of it is in good condition. I am interested in getting a 2nd car that gets better gas mileage for myself - so if I could make this work...

It's a long shot, but I thought I'd look into it. Stopped by the dealer where she dropped it off this a.m. - he said the wholesalers/salvage guys would probably give her $200-$300 for it. And that they would charge about $2200 to drop an engine in - definitely not worth it at that price.

Also talked to a guy at work this morning - he warned me off of the engines imported from Japan - called them "grey" engines. Said that you can't get parts for them here.
