My eBay item was refused by the buyer?

If USPS delivered it at 5:XX AM (seems a bit early), does that mean that the buyer was at the door and refused it at that early time?

What the buyer did is extremely annoying

I just talked with the buyer and he said that he did not receive any package to refuse...

Does a city with the zip code of 99999 even exist? This seems to be USPS' fault for delivering to the wrong place - up until the delivery attempt, it seemed to be going in the right direction and then suddenly... it ended up in 99999....

Would the post office give me a refund if I went to them?

If the package/item is damaged, I think you're supposed to refuse it if you want to claim insurance. At least I think this is the way it works with UPS, but don't quote me on that.

More likely the guy's just backing out on the sale. I'm assuming you've emailed him but haven't heard anything back yet?

how does he know it's damaged if he hasn't opened it yet? (I'm assuming that you refuse the package at the doorstep?)
 
Well serious damage would be very noticeable without even opening up the box. But like I said, the guy probably just changed his mind and decided to screw you over instead of taking responsibility for his purchase.

edit: I'd still email him and get his side of the story first before you jump to any conclusions, though. I guess it's also possible it could be an error with the tracking data.

Shipping companies can get creative when it comes to package damage. If a pallet falls off of a forklift, it will completely crush whatever is under it. And they will deliver it like that.

But what Frostedflakes suggested is more likely.

No, that's not how it works with UPS. I had a package delivered with a hole in the side. We accepted delivery then claimed the damage with UPS and received a payment. The breadmaker was actually fully functional, but it did have a dent in one side. The free-ness of the breadmaker made the bread taste better! 😉

Ah well that's good to know. For some reason I was thinking you had to refuse delivery or else you lose the ability to claim insurance. 🙂

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if USPS misdelivered it; they've done it to me.

Of course, it would be easier to take USPS's screwups if the people they delivered to said "No, THIS IS THE WRONG ADDRESS" instead of "this person doesn't live here, return all their mail to sender from now on.":roll:
