Can anyone out there please help me with my piece of sh*t.

I have a Hitachi DVD ROM, and Zoran DVD software. Whenever I start a movie, I only get audio, not video. I have the recovery disk that came with my piece of sh*t NEC computer. But I can't use that, cuz the whenever I do "EZ Recovery" something conflicts with the new version of IE I installed on my computer. (It sounds crazy, but that's what happens.)

Do I need to install some other DVD player software or what?

Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

What sort of Video card is in your system? It may be that your video card can't handle MPEG 4 decoding..You may need to buy a DVD decoder if you video card cant handle the task.
Read Anands review showing that even some of the latest video cards can't handle the task well at all. This includes the Voodoo 3-5 range of cards! Also you need a fairly fast CPU to run DVD movies smoothly especially without a decent Video card solution.

Make sure you have installed the latest drivers for your video card and also have the latest version of Microsoft's DirectX (7.0a) installed.

It also might help if you gave more info, especially what OS you are using and the type of video card you have, and any other hardware details.

I have Win98 (1st edition)

Video Card? I have no idea, where would I look for that. It shouldn't be that I don't have the latest drivers and all, because everything worked fine for a while. It seemed like when I tried to view a DVD-ROM in my computer with a software package like PC Friendly or something, that screwed it up. Basically, a DVD with DVD-ROM specific features. I dunno, it's really pissing me off.

Any ideas?

OK, since once upon a time everything was working -

Sounds like you got a hairball or something.... that's what I call it when a bunch of different versions of stuff conflict with each other and it makes you want to pull your hair out. I've been there myself. As a matter of fact, it seems I spend most of my time there......

I've had one of those friggin' "PC-Friendly" DVD's fork up my PC on a few occasions. Mainly it seems it is the "Lost in Space" DVD that screws mine up. All I could do is reinstall everything from scratch.

If you have a conflict when you try to run the "EZ Recovery" CD (I'm guessing that's what NEC shipped with your computer instead of real installation CD's for Windows, etc.), you'll have to uninstall whatever is conflicting first. Go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Software and remove the updated IE or whatever is conflicting, then try to do your recovery. Keep in mind that running the recovery CD will likely erase everything that is on your hard drive, so BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE YOU DO THIS!!!!!

And remember, this is supposed to be fun! :)
