Try reinstalling the driver for it....

Faulty drive locking mechanism. If something stops the drive from closing completely, they will re-open so you can 'clear the error'

Are you on a network?

Someone could be playing games with you via drive management (It's great fun, you should try it).

right lclick on my computer - click "Manage"
right click on "Computer Management (Local)" select the computer you want
goto storage - disk management
on the bottom where it shows the drives, right click on the drive and click eject.

I said it once, and I'll say it again... REINSTALL DRIVER.

EDIT:
Hey Juleee;

Did you just upgrade Winduh? If you did, did you check the HCL (Hardware Compliance List) to see if you DVD will be supported by the newer OS, and if there are drivers available? If not, then the newer OS (probably XP) will do you a favor by installing a driver that it thinks will be best for the device, and fux0r up the thing in the process.

Find a new driver, download it and manually reinstall the driver for the device. If that doesn't work, then the only way to get it working again is reverting back to the old OS, with the old drivers.

Does it eject the drive before your computer has even finished booting? If so, it's probably the drive.

yeah, an easy way to test... if you aren't afraid ( ;) ) is to unplug the data cable then turn the PC on. If it's still doing it, you KNOW it's the drive, because nothing in the OS can even make contact with the drive.

Sorry to take the thread off on a tangent, but after I well and truly scared myself by trying that (I could see my notebook and could have even formatted my drive from the desktop) I really want to know how I make my computer inaccessible for remote administration! Does anyone know?

As for the DVD popping out, sounds to me more like it's a mechanical malfunction or faulty circuitry, although I would not rule out driver issues. If your drive is still under warranty you should be taking it back to the vendor right away.
