its not an SMS problem, its a memory leak problem. Your phone is running out of memory and its disposing of the most disposal things first (your contacts are next, so be careful).

Try some memory managers (NOT AUTOKILLERS) to see if you can figure out what's going on. If your memory useage seems normal, you are going to be looking at another swap out battle.

Or root that mofo. That's the best answer.

i would start from a clean device and see if it happens. if not, add your apps back slowly one by one. one of them may be causing it.

I have never seen my phone below ~35mb of available memory, and that's when I'm lazy and haven't killed everything with Advanced Task Killer all day.

This is not a memory problem, based on what I've read it is a database problem. It doesn't have anything to do with how many texts I have. The first time it happened back in May, I had 2,000 texts. It happened again a week after that with like ~500 texts. That's when I downloaded SMS Backup and Restore, so the numbers have been climbing since then.

Really, it doesn't matter what the problem is. This type of behavior is unacceptable, period. Like I said, I've never encountered this on any phone I've had, though my phone exposure is admittedly limited.

Aren't your contacts saved with Google? How can you lose your contacts? When I got and setup my replacement phone, it downloaded the contacts I had entered on the original phone.

My best guess is the shear amount of txt messages you are saving. Over 6,000? Wow. I think I've hit around 400-500 talking to someone all day, but I delete my messages every day. So it sounds like there is something going on that when you have a large number of txt msgs it is causing DB problems and deleting/corrupting them.

Really frustrating. If this phone wasn't so badass, I'd happily go back to my Blackberry. At least it worked flawlessly, even after 2 years.

Maybe try reflashing the ROM? You can undo root (unless something has changed) if you need to return it for some reason.

I think the free Clockwork ROM Manager has stock ROMs that you can flash.

I think I might just try, but like I said I'm nervous about it. If I'm having these types of problems with the phone stock, it's hard to believe it will get better with 3rd party stuff. But it's possible. I guess I don't have much to lose.

When is Android 2.2 due out?

Root and flash something on there. Nothing else to try unless they'll replace it for you. Do some research until you feel comfortable with it or decide you can live with the problem until you can get a new phone. If you do root, give the Kangerade ROM a try.

Sucks that you're having those problems, mine has been rock solid since day one. So, no telling if a new ROM would even make a difference.

According to the OP's link, people are still reporting the same problem on Google's Error Report page, which is ridiculous, since the problem has been ongoing since February.

Maybe it's Androids way of telling people to communicate FTF? lol

OP, is your phone rooted, unlocked or have any type of hack/modification to it or is it straight up Android out of the box?

I tend to notice most people that have problems with Android are the people that dick with it then complain that something doesn't work.

I've had the SMS deletion issue a couple of time on my Incredible. I use the SMS backup and restore app. It does a backup once a day, but you can schedule it to do it as much as hourly. Used it twice so far.

My phone also reboots itself 3-4 times a week. Wouldn't even notice if it didn't make that "DROOIDDDD!!!" sound when it does it.
