My old 16 year old dog can no longer stand. Both hips are shot and lately her from legs have also given out. She doesnt want to go for walks outside anymore because of the pain and she is too proud so she keeps trying to stand up and falls down. She has been the greatest dog in the world. Never bit anyone, never growled. She was the sweetest dog in the world. I will miss her dearly as she has been with me for 16 of my 40 years of life. My 12 year old son has always been with his puppy. She is such a huge part of the family but I cannot let her suffer any longer. She is in a great deal of pain, and even though she is fully aware of her surroundings her quality of life is bad. She is a German Shepard/Border Collie mix and is about 80lbs so standing is excrutiating for her. I will miss her dearly as she has always been by my side. Every night she is on her doggie bed right next to me. No matter where I sleep in the house I always wake up to find her near me. Please wish her well in the afterlife. :brokenheart:

Her name is Cheyenne.

I'm afraid our 16yo Cocker spaniel may become as your puppy has before long.. I know what you're feeling.

Had to put my girl down 1-1/2 years ago after 16 yrs. Same size, same temperament. Still have her as my wallpaper, still miss her. My kids are older & still tear up when they see the pic. I feel for you.

it's best to love and lost a great companion, than to have never love him/her at all. She lived a wonderful 16 years in a caring household.

In the end, she's happy regardless of pain.

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest--and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Thank for this, it's the most beautiful dog poem I have ever read.

Thanks everyone. I am on my way now to bid farwell to my beloved dog.

I know your pain, we lost our 12 year old Boston a few months back. Took a while to get over the loss. Time will heal.
