From an emotional standpoint, it's not like the knocked over your mailbox or spilled coffee on your favorite pair of pants.

Having a living creature that you accept into your home as esentially a family member is a bit more than "common property".

I'm well aware of that, I absolutely adore my cat & would be pretty pissed off if she were killed.

I am also aware, however, that my emotional attachment does not increase her value - She's a cat from a shelter, & is essentially worthless as far as replacement value.

Are you serious? That is harsh. I would be a wreck if I lost my dog, it's not something you just let go. Do you live with other living beings or just under a cold rock? holy crap! Personally I would have feelings of burning the asshole's house down with him inside. Let go? no thanks!

OP, I am so sorry to hear that, I really hope you all the best in pursuing this, I would not let go until something was done about it! good luck... Let us know what happens.
 
The professor's actions weren't right, but at the heart of it its still an accident. Don't forget that. It's not like he told his dog to kill yours - the leash came off by accident and after that he had no control.

Look - I'm sure he meant no harm. No need to sue the guy - mourn, and move on.

Yes I am a dog owner and I would be upset if that were to happen to my dog. But at the end of the day I can't really HATE another human for a freak mistake.

At the very least you should be compensated for any medical expenses you incurred trying to save your pet and be reimbursed for whatever you paid for him. Also, it seems to me this guys dog is dangerous. Not only to other animals but to people as well. I would do everything I could to get that dog put down.

Apologies for a seemingly cold hearted reply. I've been raised with all kinds of animals, primarily dogs. I know what it's like to lose a loved pet suddenly. I guess I'll refrain from further comments.
 
WTF? i am really and deeply sorry about your dog. i have one too and i treat him as part of the family.

i really really really hope everything turns out okay for you.

my condolences for you all and for your dog.
 
How could a leash come off by "accident"? I am thinking the dog tore out of it like a bat out of hell to attack your dog. If he knew he had a dog like that, he should not have brought it on campus. And certainly should have had a better leash.

My dog, for example growls at other dogs and will run to the leash limit. It has happened where I pull on the leash to pull her away and the collar was a bit too loose. One time I guess I pulled too hard, and the collar slipped through her head and she was free (albeit for a few seconds while my brother held her down so I could get it back on).

In my case the collar was JUST loose enough to be removed by force... other cases may have different situations.
 
Run up to him, bite him in the neck and tell him not to worry. Just go see the doctor.

Additionally, I'm sincerely sorry for your loss. That guy is an asshat.

Call animal control first. Report the dog and the owner. The file a complaint with teh REAL police.

And don;t listen to viper or the other that do not know what they are talking about. YES you can sue for emotional damages.

But even if you don't sue, PLEASE file a compalint with animal control and the police. Bad pet owners make it harder for good ones to have their pets.
 
Seriously, a dog that kills another dog is simple to have impounded and put down. I am a HUGE animal lover but some animals need to be put down. What would keep that dog from killing an infant?

 
The other guy's dog should be put down. Most places have laws that if a dog kills another dog, its an automatic. And the guy should get fined and have jail time for not controlling his dog.

I'm sorry you had to go through this. Find a new dog to try to fill the place left by the other one. And take your dog that has passed on and bury his body/ashes somewher ein your yard. Put up a gravestone. put up photos in a little collage... etc.

No mention of what kind of dog his was ? How big was it ? If it acted that aggressively and had some size (especially compared to a toy dog)... I'd pull mine up and protect it with my life.

Sorry for your loss.. it's a tough one. It would've been more tragic if it was a lifelong friend... hopefully you can get over your loss easier this way.

Said from someone who's never owned a pet or at least never owned the right pet since the right ones become part of the family and are just as important as kids.
