the one thing I'd expect a dog to be good at would be scaring away and killing small creatures. and my dog is both giant and aggressive.

when a bird flew into my house this morning, I figured my dog would be able to, if not eat it, scare and corral it out the door.

but alas, my giant retriever did nothing. he barked, to alert me to the presence of the bird, but once he saw that I was aware, he was like "fuck it, my job is done" and laid down to take a nap.

No, that's good, do you really want your dog barking and going crazy over every passing pedestrian and small animal that comes your way? We let our dogs bark once or twice, then tell them to shut up, and they shut up or get smacked.

He's waiting for you to shoot it, then he'll break it's neck and bring it to you - that's what retrievers are for. I used to have a golden retriever and he would pick up just about anything, shake, then drop it on my feet.
