As my dog has gotten older (12.5yrs), she's become allergic to beef, lamb, chicken, and egg. Lately we've given her fish-based dog foods, but her allergies lately have been worse than ever.

Her skin and ears became sunburn red and she could hardly sleep because of her need to lick and chew itches. We could hardly pet her anywhere without her cringing with an itch, and couldn't leave her alone for fear she would chew a leg off.

Allergy medicine like benadryl or xurtek did nothing. Omega 3/6 pills did little to nothing.

Finally we found a solution - grain-free dog food! (made by Taste of the Wild)

Within only one day her redness improved and she felt much better, and we could touch her again without her contorting her body to scratch.

Its been 4 days and the redness is almost gone, she sleeps like a rock, and rarely licks (dogs will be dogs tho...)

What a relief, hopefully this is a lasting solution. The [useless] vet trips were getting very expensive as well as buying all the different foods. The local independent pet store also has a 100% satisfaction guarantee...if this food didn't work for her, I could return it for store credit ($42/30lb.) They were outstanding.

Cliffs:

Older dog, horrible escalating allergies to all dog foods tried
Solution: Grain-free dog food (fish and potato based)

my GF's dog is allergic to grass... so he gets all red from just going outside...

A vet we visited said most allergies were environmental related. I don't know about most, we didn't believe it for our dog, but its definitely a common factor.

At one point we were afraid it was grass but thought she would be much more red underneath if that were the case. Thank goodness, she absolutely loves lying out in the grass for hours at a time just sniffing the air.

I feel your pain. I have a dog that has seasonal and food allergies. She cannot have dairy, corn, anything with glutens, or most protiens. At one point I was home cooking her meals to try to determine what she was allergic to. Chicken, beef, turkey and even halibut or salmon all give her diarrhea. The one dog food she can eat is Natures Balance Potato and Duck formula, and only the canned formula at that because the dry food has something in it that also gives her the runs.

Seasonal and all those food allergies, that's brutal. Our next step was to make everything ourselves too. I was already looking for fish on sale. That's a lot of work, but its agonizing to see a pet suffer.

We actually went to this pet store thinking we'd be getting Nature's Balance, since we were told by a couple people it is a single-source protein food and might serve her well.
