I lost my cat a few months ago (and no, it doesn't respond to ping). He walked out the door and never came back. I figure he's dead. But I still have hope.
i hate dogs- the bane of existence- the yapping wallering hounds of hell have caused me to lose sleep on many occasions. One less dog in the world means the world is a "dog gone" better place, That said, i mourned like hell when my own dog died.
Aww, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog, I have a dog that's aging and it seems as when I go back to college this Fall, she maybe will not make it through it. Oh well, life comes and go but they're so rewarding. Keep her in your mind, like I will always keep my dad in my mind.
I know how you feel, I had my dog since I was 5 (he lived to 13). It was hard to do, but I knew he was hurting, he could barely stand up. In the end, you just don't want them to hurt anymore, so you do what you think is best for them.

what are the possibilities of burying them in a makeshift wooden box in your backyard ? Do vets let you take the body back ?
Sorry to hear of your loss. We had to put down one of our cats last month and it was very hard for me. I was there when he was born and he was really pretty special to me. As for rh71's question, I suspect it depends on where you live and local ordinances. Here they will let us bury them in the backyard if we want however we always choose to have them cremated.
