My dog caught a squirrel this morning

We have a fenced in backyard, which isn't very large because we have a sizable deck (it's a townhome). So, my wife lets the dog out there this morning to take care of business, and my wife hears a scuffling underneath the deck on the concrete. She goes to look and sees the dog with the squirrel's tail in her mouth, shaking the crap out of the thing.

Somehow the squirrel gets loose and runs through the fence and darts up the nearest tree. It goes near the top and sits there, stunned and presumably in some pain (but not visibly hurt, she didn't bite it) for about two hours before disappearing.

This follows a New Years Eve killing of a mouse in the neighborhood as we were out on a walk. It was pitch black (power outage), and the dog pounced in the grass. I didn't know what she was doing and yanked on the leash -- she came over to me and had the mouse in her mouth! I yelled at her, and she dropped the mouse, who moved once and then...didn't. She must have smushed it with her paw and then grabbed it in her mouth as a prize.

The best part is that the mouse was gone later in the morning (it was there in the early morning). Many scavengers in the air around here!

Any why would that be? She's an animal, a big one (~70 lbs) and is of a breed born to hunt lions (Rhodesian Ridgeback). I would be more worried if she didn't try to hunt a bit.

She's a very sweet dog, and my wife and I have absolute faith in her being around our five year old. The biggest worry is the dog stealing food, and she is an absolute master at it.

I heard that mouse was ugly, and wanted to die.

It was ugly after she stepped on it. I doubt she knew what she was pouncing on, probably just saw movement in the grass and jumped (I could barely see out there). She's always jumped at movement like that. It is also the second mouse she's killed -- the first was in our previous house, and we praised her a great deal for that one.

Proof that your dog is smarter than you. He's sizing you up and plotting while you sleep. 😉

Because when a dog kills something its a vicious killing machine and its next victim will probably be a child. While a cat's killing spree is considered harmless and we make threads keeping track of its kills and laugh about it. At least that is how it goes on this forum.
