I have heard of viruses that similar things to that. Though the one I heard of also replaces your backround with solid black. I would reccommend exploring the possibiltiy that your computer has caught a bug.

Maybe you could try installing the driver package? Also, did you disable any startup entries? I've heard that sometimes little startup apps supply extra tabs for graphics drivers.

If you are desperate enough, you could partition the drive with software like partition magic, move the files to the other part of the drive and the OS to the another partition, and reformat the windows partition and reinstall. And afterwards, you might be able to remerge the partitions.

Found this on another forum.

Open up the registry (regedit) and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Double click the files NoDispBackgroundPage and NoDispAppearancePage and change their value from 1 to 0

Delete the file wallpaper REG_SZ

personally I'd think about getting another hard drive
if you that worried about losing data your main problem is not having a good back up strategy

also in my opinion having your windows on a 250GB partition with the rest of your files isn't a good way to go

when you update and reinstall your system files more than likely will be placed further and futher down the drive and performance may suffer.

I don't think resizing your current partition is the way to go because for one it might take a very long time with that much data
and then these programs can fail and without a back up you might find yourself in the situation you are trying to avoid
