MY DIRECT X 8 Direct 3D REFUSES TO WORK!!! HELP!

Direct X 7 executables function on my WIN XP system but v. 8 is unavailable. dxdiag reports the following error on Direct 3D:

Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available)


I tried reinstalling direct X 8, but it didnt fix anything. I also changed video cards and reinstalled the nvidia detonator drivers.... Please advise! Thanks!
 
Go into the DirectX utility.. I believe it's called Dxdiag.exe.. and disable direct 3d acceleration. Reboot.. then re-enable it.
