My desktop is locked out or invisible?

While trying to figure out what all the alt- and ctrl- shortcut keys do i think I may have locked myself out of my desktop. Now nothing happens whenever I click on an item in the desktop control panel.
Also Ive tried pushing alt-F2 and type something like:
man some_command

to load a console
I hear it loading(HD thrashing) but it doenst show up. Thats why I think that its there but just not showing up. Any ideas?

You should see four boxes 2 by 2 and you might have switched windows that way...
