My dentist charges $346 for a cleaning

I hear average is $50-200.

My $346 includes fluoride and x-rays... but still. What a racket for 1 hour 8 minutes in the office.

D:

That really sounds ridiculous.

You know what's worse? On my current dental plan, I only pay $20 USD or so for a cleaning. A filling costs the same. X-rays maybe $5.

Well my insurance covers 80% and my health spending account covers the balance. I pay zero out of pocket, but still.

find another dentist. Dont you have dental insurance? Cleanings are usually free with most insurance. Or are you complaining about how much the dentist bills the ins company?

I don't have dental insurance, I pay my dentist about $80 for a standard cleaning. Obviously the US system is broken beyond repair.

Depends, many docs and dentists down here don't take insurance at all.

The price you end up paying is to not be corraled into a cattle car.

For some paying $500 for a cleaning done as soon as they get there vs waiting even 30mins and paying $50 is much much better.

my dental insurance includes 2 free cleaning per year. If you want cheap dental work, find a dental school, they always need real people to practice on, and I heard they do a better job than a dental office, because they get graded on.

This reminds me I need to make a dentist appointment. Shouldn't cost jack shit with my insurance, maybe 20 bucks.

where the hell do you live where doctors and dentists don't accept insurance?

it was because of the xrays

just a cleaning wouldn't have been that expensive look at your bill

My cleaning and fluoride bill is about $100 Canadian.

If I get X-rays, it's about $190. I think I've seen it as high as $250 for X-ray and pulling/filling.

FYI, I've seen it happen so many times it's not funny... If your doctor knows that your insurance gives you full coverage, or that you have minimal out of pocket expenses, they will max out the bill. I know of doctors who bill the limit ($200+) for a 10 minute check-up, then tack on bullshit procedures because they can get away with it.

until you get the greenhorn, who is destined to fail out, then all bets are off.
I had an intern nurse draw blood once. Instead of using the needle with the tube to fill the vials she used one that just connected to the vial. Each time she would change the vial, the needle would move in my arm and the nurse watching would say, "careful". As she pulled out the 3rd vial, the needle poked through and they had to stop and go to the other arm. The regular nurse took over, it wasn't a pleasant experience. D:

How many xrays? Two... four.. or did you have a full mouth series?
Did the dentist clean your teeth?
Did you have root planing and scaling or just a regular "every 6 months" cleaning?

Why are you getting fluoride?

Turn them in. That is insurance fraud.

I just got a new dentist and she said that most insurance companies will only cover a full set of x-rays every 2 years. We're waiting until next year because I had some done roughly 1.5 years ago (I'm pretty sure anyway). I was lucky my dentist pointed this out to me. Will be sticking with this dentist most likely (my previous dentist retired).

What is sad is that there are no discounts for those of us that don't have insurance (at least from the 3 dentists that I've called). You would think that they would be happy to take your cash at a lower rate (at least whatever a normal insurance company would pay for services) and not have to deal with paperwork. I've had several doctors do the same (no discount for non-insurance).
