My Delta 60mm fan got a lot quieter after I...

...bought a 3-pin connector to molex adaptor and started running it off the power supply instead of the motherboard.

I used the fan with an SK6 heatsink on three different motherboards: a KT7 mobo, an 8KTA3+ mobo and an 8K7A+. Each time it was plugged into the respective motherboard and it lived up to it's reputation as being way too loud on all three. Today I bought the adaptor and I'm running it off 300Watt power supply. (I'm using a KA266 motherboard.)

Surprise! The fan is much quieter. In fact, right now I'm using the system with the case open and the fan is barely audible.

i thought molex's gave more power than the mobo.....but great, let me know if that works, i've heard the stories, but decided to get one anyways, it's comming in the mail in a few days, and it'd be great to know i can quiet the beast

he probably got the pins mixed up somehow. it's the equivalent of the 7v trick where u use the yellow and red leads instead of yellow and black (12 volt) or red and black (5 volt).

he obviously did 1 of 2 things, he's using the red and black leads and gettin 5 volts to the fan, quieter, but no where near the performance or is using the yellow and red leads which comes out at 7 volts, again quieter but not as good performance.

PlatinumGold hit the nail on the head. There's only one way to connect the adaptor, so one can't get the pins "mixed up." I just checked though and the adaptor does rely on the black and red leads so it looks like I am only getting 5volts to the fan. Current CPU temps are 47C. I think I'll see how this works at the lower voltage ... and enjoy the quiet.

You're really lucky the fan even starts at 5volts, could have been a fried CPU there.

Is it better to plug in the Delta using a 3-4 pin adapter than plugging it directly into the motherboard? I have a Epox 8K7A if that matters...

It really isn't adviseable to run the Delta on the 3-pin mobo connecter, it draws a lot of Amps and can burn the Fan Header out.

Not sure about your MB. Check the specs for the fan header on yours. The header on the kt7 raid will support 6 watts so no problem on my board.

where exactly can you buy those 3 to 4 pin adapters? I have already been victimized by a burned out fan header on my BX mobo -_-. Whats the point of rpm signal on a 3 pin header if no mobo can handle it? or ARE there mobos which can handle it, unlike mine?

I ran the delta at 5 7 and 12v.. it had NO problems running at each.. even at 5 it pushed a decent amount of air.. on the thermoengine it kept it a 1 gig tbird at 52Cish.. and you knwo asus a7v lies and says higher than it realy is said 49 at 7v and 45 at 12..

MrCide, it's good that your delta will start at 5v, but mine won't.
Several other fans I have tested won't either.
Even at sevenvolts.comthey state that some fans have trouble starting at low voltage.

I am thinking about getting a delta and running at 5 and 7v possibly. What rpm does the fan run at at each of those voltages? I have a volcano II fan that pushes 25cfm at most which is ok, but if I get a delta and run it at 7v will it be better or worse?

I ran my Delta at 7V too. It was SO much quiter but the performance dropped to that of my YSTech fan so in the end I just used the YSTech fan...
